Kyle Allen Returns to Buffalo Bills on Two-Year Deal

Backup quarterback Kyle Allen has agreed to a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bills as the NFL’s legal tampering period began on Monday. Allen, formerly with the Detroit Lions, will rejoin the Bills after spending the 2023 season serving as Josh Allen’s backup. His deal is reportedly worth $6.1 million over two years.

Career Background and Recent Performance

Kyle Allen has appeared in 34 NFL games with 19 career starts, including three appearances for the Lions during the 2026 season. Originally signed by Detroit on a one-year deal last offseason, he competed with Hendon Hooker for the backup role behind starting quarterback Jared Goff. Allen’s strong postseason efforts secured him the position, leading to Hooker’s release before his third NFL season.

During the 2026 season, Allen saw limited action, completing zero of two passes over three games as Jared Goff started all 17 contests for Detroit. Allen’s overall NFL stats include 442 completions on 707 attempts, 4,753 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. His heaviest workload was in 2019, starting 12 games for the Carolina Panthers.

Team Movements and Player History

Aside from the Lions, Panthers, and Bills, Allen’s NFL journey includes time with the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, and Pittsburgh Steelers since entering the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent from Houston. After performing well enough to outpace Hooker in Detroit’s depth chart, Allen’s roster spot was secured ahead of the 2025 season.

Meanwhile, Detroit has been active in free agency, securing signings including center Cade Mays and offensive tackle Larry Borom. The Lions have yet to finalize all their roster moves, which will officially begin when the new league year starts at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Detroit Lions’ Quarterback Situation and Draft Impact

Jared Goff has emerged as a strong franchise quarterback for Detroit since his acquisition in the 2021 trade involving Matthew Stafford, bringing four consecutive winning seasons to the team. The Lions drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, but injury and performance setbacks limited his role. Hooker spent most of 2023 on injured reserve, served as backup through much of 2024, then was supplanted after Teddy Bridgewater joined the team late in the season.

Hooker’s preseason struggles ahead of 2025 led to his release, after which he joined the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad and eventually the New York Jets. With Allen securing the backup spot for the Lions in 2025, Detroit will now need to fill that role again moving forward.

The Significance of Allen’s Return to Buffalo

Kyle Allen’s return to the Bills offers Buffalo a familiar and experienced backup quarterback to support Josh Allen. Having been part of Buffalo’s roster last year, he understands the team’s playbook and dynamics, potentially strengthening the quarterback depth heading into future seasons. For Detroit, Allen’s departure marks another shift in their quarterback depth chart, emphasizing the ongoing competition and roster adjustments as the team solidifies its plans behind Jared Goff.
