Steelers Bring Back Punter Cameron Johnston on One-Year Deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially signed punter Cameron Johnston to a one-year contract as of March 10, 2026, marking his return to the team. This move brings Johnston back to Pittsburgh after the punter was released in 2024 while recovering from an injury, reaffirming the team’s confidence in his abilities.

Johnston’s Professional Journey and Recent Performance

At 33 years old, Cameron Johnston began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. After initially being waived following the preseason, he secured a futures contract with the Eagles for the 2018 season and later signed an exclusive rights deal. He continued his career by joining the Houston Texans in 2021.

In March 2024, the Steelers signed Johnston to a significant three-year contract worth $9 million. However, he was among the final roster cuts during that year’s camp. Subsequently, Johnston joined the Buffalo Bills in September, appearing in three games during the 2025 season. During that time, he punted seven times, accumulating 308 yards with a 44.0-yard average, and successfully placed two punts inside the 20-yard line.

Following an injury settlement with the Bills, Johnston spent time on the New York Giants’ practice squad, before the Steelers chose to bring him back for the upcoming season.

Implications and Expectations for Johnston’s Return to Pittsburgh

Re-signing Cameron Johnston strengthens the Steelers’ special teams unit as they prepare for the new NFL season. Given his previous performances and familiarity with the team’s system, Johnston’s return is expected to provide stability at the punter position. The decision also reflects the Steelers’ strategic approach to leveraging experienced players who can contribute immediately.
