On Wednesday evening in Denver, Kiefer Sherwood will make his debut for the San Jose Sharks in a pivotal game against the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche. This matchup, the final one before the Olympic break, carries high stakes as the Sharks seek to halt their three-game losing streak and strengthen their playoff chances in the Western Conference.
Sherwood’s Return Following Injury and Role on Top Line
Acquired by the Sharks from the Vancouver Canucks on January 19, Sherwood has been sidelined with an upper-body injury until recently. He participated fully in the team’s practice session in Chicago on Tuesday, where he skated on the Sharks’ first line alongside promising youngsters Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Sherwood is expected to remain on this line during the crucial game against Colorado, tasked with energizing the Sharks’ offense and stabilizing their scoring efforts.
“Those guys are world-class players. Their magic speaks for itself,”
Sherwood said Tuesday, referring to Celebrini and Smith.
“I’ll try to play to their strengths, win some pucks back, create some space for them, and just get them the puck.”
Previously, the Sharks experimented with Tyler Toffoli, William Eklund, and Collin Graf alongside Celebrini, but Sherwood is expected to solidify the role and inject physicality into the unit.
“I think he can win pucks,”
said Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky Wednesday.
“He can help win pucks and keep pucks alive and keep that line in the offensive zone. He brings a level of physicality, which is an identity setter for our group.”
Roster Adjustments and Playoff Implications
To accommodate Sherwood, San Jose placed veteran forward Ryan Reaves on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury, with Reaves expected to be day-to-day. Sherwood’s addition comes at a crucial time as the Sharks trail the Seattle Kraken by three points for the Western Conference’s second wild card position.

With 17 goals in 44 games this season, Sherwood is a key scoring addition as a pending unrestricted free agent. San Jose hopes to negotiate a contract extension with him before the offseason begins. His presence could be vital for the Sharks’ playoff push during this tightly contested stretch of the schedule.
“I’ve been itching for a while, and was just hoping to try to get back before the break,”
Sherwood said Wednesday.
“I want to get to know the guys a little bit on the ice. Off the ice, they’ve been extremely welcoming.”
Lineup Decisions Ahead of Game Night
For Wednesday’s showdown, Yaroslav Askarov will start as goalie for San Jose. Forwards Pavol Regenda and Jeff Skinner, along with defenseman Sam Dickinson, will be scratched for the game. Sherwood’s arrival not only fills a lineup gap but also shifts the dynamic on the team’s top line, which has been searching for consistent offensive production amid recent struggles.
Sherwood’s NHL Journey and Experience with Elite Players
Sherwood is poised to play for his fifth NHL club this season. After starting his professional career with the Anaheim Ducks, playing 60 games over three seasons from 2018 to 2020, he signed with Colorado as a free agent. Although most of his time there was spent with their AHL affiliate, he appeared in 27 games for the Avalanche and trained alongside some of the game’s elite players.
“I didn’t spend much time here, but I saw what it took from the top guys and how they’re wired,”
Sherwood shared.
“That competitiveness is something that I kind of try and use, seeing it firsthand and picking their brain a little bit on certain occasions.”
After becoming an AHL All-Star in 2022, Sherwood moved on from Colorado when he was not re-signed and subsequently signed with the Nashville Predators before joining the Sharks.
Significance of Sherwood’s Debut for San Jose’s Future
Sherwood’s inclusion brings fresh energy and a physical edge precisely when the Sharks need it most. With playoff positioning on the line and a challenging schedule looming, his ability to complement young talent and contribute offensively could be a turning point for San Jose. The team’s management and coaching staff clearly view him as an important piece moving forward, as they aim to secure his services beyond this season.
As the Sharks face the Avalanche, a high-powered offense and the NHL’s top team, the pressure is on Sherwood and his Sharks teammates to deliver a strong performance before the Olympic break. How Sherwood adapts and impacts the team in this debut could influence the Sharks’ momentum in the critical second half of the season.
