Sabres Scratch Kesselring to Reset After Injury Struggles

In Buffalo, defenseman Michael Kesselring was held out of the lineup during Tuesday’s 4-3 overtime defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning as Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff opted to give the player time to reset after ongoing injury issues. Kesselring, who has struggled to find consistency this season due to a knee injury and a recurring high ankle sprain, was rested with the aim of helping his recovery and performance.

Injury History and Performance Difficulties Impacting Kesselring’s Play

Since training camp, Kesselring’s season has been hampered by lower-body injuries that have limited his effectiveness on the ice. Across his first 23 games, the 25-year-old defenseman has shown only brief moments reflective of the potential that the Sabres saw when acquiring him in the trade sending JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth. The combination of injuries and effort to compensate has held back his ability to establish a steady rhythm with the team.

Coach Lindy Ruff’s Approach to Kesselring’s Development

Ruff used Kesselring’s scratch on Tuesday as an opportunity to review elements of his game. The coach addressed the player directly, focusing on mental and physical readiness.

“I spent some time with him about where I thought his game was at,”

Ruff explained prior to Thursday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins at KeyBank Center.

“He’s been struggling with the injury part of it and coming back and another injury. Again, suffered the same injury, so really just felt just take a breath, take a game off, get him back in tonight. But get your head in the right place.”

Ruff indicated that Kesselring has occasionally forced plays, attempting to push the puck forward in unfavorable situations rather than focusing on fundamental defensive responsibilities.

“Play well defensively and make a good first pass,”

Ruff advised.

“I think he’s really trying to push the game in a sense where up ice where probably not the greatest time to be going. But just trying to make stuff happen instead of just let it happen.”

Kesselring’s Expected Return and Roster Adjustment

Kesselring is slated to return to the Sabres’ lineup Thursday for their final game before the Olympic break, replacing defenseman Zach Metsa, who will be scratched to make room. The move reflects the team’s desire to have Kesselring regain confidence and rhythm ahead of the hiatus.

Additional Injury Update: Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s Olympic Absence

Meanwhile, Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen faces disappointment as a recent lower-body injury will prevent him from participating in the upcoming Winter Olympics. The 26-year-old, who had secured a spot on Team Finland, has been sidelined since January 27. Ruff expressed regret over Luukkonen’s misfortune.

“You end up within a week or two of going, and you end up with an injury,”

Ruff noted.

“Nothing serious, but it’s going to hold him out of it.”

Looking Ahead: Team Focus Before Olympic Pause

The Sabres enter the break after a tense period marked by injury setbacks to key players like Kesselring and Luukkonen, affecting their lineup and performance. The coaching staff’s efforts to manage player health and mental readiness will be critical as the team prepares for post-Olympics competition. Kesselring’s recovery and adjustment could prove important to Buffalo’s defensive depth moving forward.
