Tom Wilson Joins McDavid & Celebrini on Canada’s Top Olympic Line

Tom Wilson is positioned to play a key role for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics after early practice sessions suggested a major role for the Washington Capitals winger. Wilson arrived in Milan, Italy, alongside teammate Logan Thompson and immediately took part in Canada’s first skate before their February 12 opener against Czechia, joining the top line alongside Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini.

Unconventional Placement of Wilson in Canada’s Leading Forward Line

Wilson’s presence on the top Canadian line might surprise some, given his reputation as a gritty checking-line forward, but his history shows experience alongside elite players such as Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Nicklas Backstrom with the Capitals. His role on this line will likely involve using his physicality to open up space for McDavid and Celebrini on the tighter Olympic ice surface.

The dynamic recalls McDavid’s successful partnership with two-way winger Zach Hyman on the Edmonton Oilers, where McDavid helped Hyman score 54 goals during the 2023-24 NHL season. This trio—skating with the NHL’s scoring leader McDavid (96 points) and fourth-ranked scorer Celebrini (81 points)—combines for an impressive 226 points including 85 goals this season. This trio is a new configuration for Canada, as neither Wilson nor Celebrini represented the country at last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off.

Canada’s Broader Roster Strategy and Line Combinations

Besides the top line, Canada plans to distribute its talent with centers like Nathan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby each leading their respective lines. Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman noted ongoing adjustments, including Nick Suzuki and Sam Reinhart exchanging places between the second and fourth lines. Sam Bennett and Seth Jarvis, who were added to the roster due to injuries, appear likely to be healthy scratches at the tournament’s start.

Goaltender decisions remain unsettled, with competition expected between Jordan Binnington, who guarded Canada’s net at the 4 Nations Face-Off, and Logan Thompson from the Capitals. Darcy Kuemper is anticipated to fill the role of the third goalie.

Upcoming Men’s Hockey Action as Olympics Get Underway

Although the women’s hockey tournament has already started, the men’s competition will begin in the coming days, with Slovakia and Finland scheduled to face off first on Wednesday. Canada’s strategic lineup, bolstered by Wilson’s unexpected top-line role, will be closely watched as the tournament unfolds.
