Bruins Coach Praises Swayman, McAvoy After Olympic Gold Win

The Boston Bruins celebrated as teammates Charlie McAvoy and Jeremy Swayman led Team USA to a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against Canada, clinching their first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980. The win took place at the Winter Olympics, capturing the attention of hockey fans worldwide and bringing immense pride to the Bruins organization.

Coach Marco Sturm Reflects on the Historic Match

During Sunday morning practice, Bruins coach Marco Sturm shared his excitement over the game, noting the intensity and global attention it attracted.

“We had all the TV’s going. … We followed it closely. What a great hockey game. What a great game to watch globally and represent the great sport of hockey. And having a game like that — it was an even game. But good for the U.S. It was just a great hockey game,”

Sturm told reporters.

Charlie McAvoy’s Critical Defensive Effort

McAvoy’s crucial defensive play helped maintain the tie in a tense moment of the game. When Tom Wilson regained control of a loose puck after goalie Connor Hellebuyck attempted to cover a rebound, Wilson attempted a pass behind the net, but McAvoy was in position to block it, preventing a goal against Team USA. This key intervention kept the game level and contributed to the eventual overtime win.

Overcoming Injuries to Achieve Olympic Success

McAvoy’s route to gold was marked by significant physical challenges. Last year, a severe shoulder injury and infection forced him out of the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, which included a USA-Canada championship game. During this season, McAvoy endured a broken jaw requiring surgery and lost nearly 20 pounds while recovering. Just before the Olympics, he suffered another blow when a high elbow struck his jaw, causing notable swelling, as he revealed on social media, admitting the pain made him feel like he had to start over physically.

Coach Sturm Honors the Resilience of Bruins Players

Sturm expressed pride in both Swayman and McAvoy for their perseverance and ultimate success.

“Especially with Sway, and Charlie — the things they went through the past year, two years, this year — now coming home with gold, that for me makes me happy,”

he said.

“Of course they’re a Bruin, they’re one of us. So we’re really excited about that.”

Teammate Andrew Peeke Celebrates the Olympic Achievement

Andrew Peeke, who earned gold with Team USA in last year’s World Championship, reflected on the significance of the win and shared his emotions watching the final.

“Hockey players, fans across the world, that was pretty special to watch,”

Peeke said.

“It was super nerve-racking, though, to be honest with you. Happy for Charlie and Sway. That’s obviously some of the highest of highs that you can have right there. It’s an honor.”

Looking Ahead to Bruins’ Upcoming Game

The Bruins will return to the ice on February 26 when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets, carrying the momentum and inspiration from their teammates’ Olympic gold triumph as they continue their NHL season.
