Jean-Gabriel Pageau Shrugs Off Trade Rumors Amid Islanders Surge

The New York Islanders are entering the unofficial second half of the NHL season immediately following the conclusion of the Olympic break, holding the third and final automatic playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division. As of now, they sit just one point behind the second-place Pittsburgh Penguins. Despite the team’s promising standing, veteran center Jean-Gabriel Pageau continues to face recurring trade speculation ahead of the league’s March 6 trade deadline, even as the Islanders appear to be in their best position in several years. The ongoing rumors offer a stark contrast to the team’s upward trajectory and Pageau’s integral role on the roster.

Pageau Acknowledges Trade Buzz but Maintains Focus

Pageau addressed the constant chatter surrounding his possible trade, recognizing it as an annual pattern linked to this time of year. He explained,

“It’s the same. I feel like, especially around this time of year, everyone wants to change their team, make them better. They want new faces,”

Pageau told amNewYork. He added,

“That’s what it is, and I haven’t followed much of the social media, especially around this time. I know what it is because [the press] brings it up. So why would I need to think about it if you guys bring it up? So it is what it is. I can try to control what I can and just spend quality time with my family and focus on my teammates, how I can make my teammates even better, and that’s my main focus.”

Consistent Role Amid Persistent Rumors

These trade speculations are nothing new for the 33-year-old center. Whether it was during Patrick Roy’s mid-season arrival last year or on draft night after visiting general manager Mathieu Darche’s draft moves, Pageau’s name has repeatedly surfaced. Despite the ongoing speculation, Pageau remains a crucial piece of the Islanders’ lineup. As a key component of the bottom-six forwards, he has contributed 12 goals, excels as a top penalty-killer, and is regarded as one of the league’s premier face-off specialists. Among NHL players who have taken at least 500 face-offs this season, Pageau ranks fifth with a 60.4% win rate.

Coaching Staff Emphasizes Pageau’s Importance

Patrick Roy, the Islanders’ head coach, highlighted Pageau’s value to the team, stating,

“His experience is certainly very important to us.”

Roy also remarked,

“He plays with heart and passion. It’s nice to have these guys on our side during this [second-half] stretch. I call this stretch the third period. We gotta be bold now more than ever and find ways to focus on how we want to be better. What can we do to be at our best?”

This sentiment underscores the leadership and intangible qualities Pageau brings, especially during a critical playoff push.

Pageau’s Role as a Mentor and Team Glue

The Islanders view Pageau as more than just a player; he is a mentor to emerging talents on the team, notably Simon Holmstrom, who has grown into a reliable two-way player capable of scoring 20 goals. Trading a player with these leadership qualities and specific skill sets would risk undermining team chemistry at a crucial stage of the season. Pageau reflected on his impact, saying,

“I take pride in that role that I’ve had since coming here. It’s changed a lot every game, every week, sometimes. But I always stick to what I can do best: bring my effort, my knowledge, and try to be better for my teammates.”

Islanders Surpassing Expectations

Coming into this season, the Islanders anticipated a rebuilding or transitional year after missing the playoffs last year and making roster adjustments under new general manager Mathieu Darche, who also secured the No. 1 overall draft pick, Matthew Schaefer. However, with 24 games left in the season, the Islanders are not just performing well—they are exceeding expectations and strongly positioned as a playoff team. Pageau expressed belief in the group’s potential:

“I always believed in this group. There’s something special that’s here in this room. We keep having that belief that drives us every day to be better, even our practices right now, I feel like we’re moving forward every day, trying to be better.”

Outlook as Trade Deadline Approaches

With the NHL trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Islanders are poised to make a deep playoff push, and their current form has offered little incentive to dismantle the roster. Despite the persistent trade discussions surrounding Jean-Gabriel Pageau, his steady leadership, on-ice performance, and mentorship role make him an essential asset rather than a trade chip. The veteran center’s ability to maintain focus and lead by example during this tense period reflects the team’s collective resolve to remain competitive in a challenging division. As the season progresses, the Islanders will need contributions from core players like Pageau to solidify their postseason spot and advance beyond previous seasons’ shortcomings.
