On February 5, just before the NHL entered its Olympic break, the Washington Capitals secured an important victory against the Nashville Predators, driven by a pivotal power-play goal from defenseman Jakob Chychrun. With 6:49 left in the third period, Dylan Strome executed a sharp pass near the blue line, slipping the puck past a penalty-killer to Chychrun, who then fired a shot past Predators goalie Justus Annunen. This goal, Chychrun’s second of the night and his 21st of the season—leading all defensemen in scoring—put the Capitals ahead 4-2 in a game they desperately needed to win.
Tom Wilson’s Intense Celebration Ignites Teammates
Immediately following the goal, an unexpected moment unfolded on the ice. Tom Wilson suddenly skated over and forcefully shoulder-checked Dylan Strome into the glass before playfully punching him several times on the right arm. According to lipreading, Wilson shouted, “That’s f***ing right.” Chychrun then joined in by lightly punching Strome in the chest, and Capitals forward Ryan Leonard quickly jumped into the celebration pile. The animated scene was captured and shared widely on social media by user @bobbyfinnerty2.
Ryan Leonard later described the mood, saying,
“Hockey’s fun, so sometimes you’ve got to be loose and mess around a little bit.”
The Encouragement Behind the Outburst
The seemingly rowdy celebration actually stemmed from a place of leadership and motivation. After the Capitals were scored on earlier in the third period, the team struggled to maintain momentum. Strome recounted the sequence to reporter Katie Adler from RMNB, explaining that a laps in five-on-five play led to Nashville’s Michael McCarron scoring at 1:17 into the final period, cutting the Capitals’ lead to just one goal.

Strome said,
“Actually, Tom, Ovi, and I had gotten scored on earlier on in the third period, so we weren’t playing too much the rest of the game.”
He detailed how Wilson’s actions came in response to a missed opportunity during a power play.
“And then we got a power play, and I made a bad [play],”
Strome admitted.
“Like Tom kind of gave me a puck in my feet, and he knows I can make that play. And I didn’t make the play.”
Strome recalled Wilson’s direct approach:
“So the next power play, he just came up to me on the way to the faceoff circle and just told me that I could make the next play. He didn’t, you know, scream at me, but he was pretty stern and said, ‘You know, make a play here. We need a goal. Make a play.’ So when I passed it to Chychy, and then Chychy scored, obviously, we were excited.”
Teammates’ Reaction Reveals the Intensity of Wilson’s Drive
After the goal, Wilson’s physical nudge sparked a celebratory frenzy among the players.
Strome described the moment:
“Tom just came in and just shoved me from behind because he told me to make the play. And then I pushed Chychy. And then, I don’t know, Lenny went to dunk on the guy. So it was more just, we were all just excited because we weren’t playing five-on-five—our line, the rest of the third—and we got a power play and we made it count.”
For Strome, Wilson’s actions highlighted the positive leadership dynamic within the Capitals lineup.
“It was a real leadership play by Tom,”
Strome noted.
“I felt like he fired me up right before the faceoff. We won the draw. Went right back to me, to Chychy, in the goal. So it was just one of those plays where we were just excited to get the goal. And we kind of screwed up earlier on in the game, so we were happy to help the team out there when we weren’t playing and just on a power play.”
Wilson’s Role as a Driving Force for the Capitals
Tom Wilson’s fierce leadership appears to be a key element in maintaining the Capitals’ strong competitive spirit throughout the season. His ability to motivate teammates under pressure not only fuels individual performance but also strengthens team cohesion during critical moments. This recent episode demonstrates how Wilson’s intensity on the ice can ignite celebrations that underscore unity and determination.
As the team heads into the Olympic break, this example of leadership and camaraderie sets a tone for the Capitals’ continuing effort to secure victories in the tightly contested NHL season ahead.
