Aleksander Barkov’s Season in Jeopardy Amid Panthers’ Struggles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers have been severely impacted by injuries throughout the 2025-26 NHL season, hindering their chances to defend their championship. Among the significant challenges, captain Aleksander Barkov’s extensive injury has kept him sidelined since September following surgery to repair torn ACL and MCL ligaments.

With only 25 games left in the regular season, Florida remains eight points behind the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, putting their playoff hopes in doubt. Barkov’s absence, given his status as a three-time Selke Trophy winner, has been especially damaging to the team’s performance.

New Salary Cap Rules Complicate Barkov’s Return

This season marks a departure from previous years, as the NHL has introduced a salary cap specifically for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Teams will now be required to keep the 20 players dressed for each playoff game—18 skaters and two goaltenders—within this cap. Barkov, earning $10 million annually, presents a unique challenge under these updated financial constraints.

Previously, the Panthers could place Barkov on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) during the playoffs, gaining full salary cap relief to acquire other players while activating him once healthy. That option is no longer available under the new playoff rules.

Instead, Florida can only relieve his $10 million cap hit if they designate him on Season Ending LTIR (SELTIR). This move would rule Barkov out for the remainder of the season, including any postseason play, forcing a critical decision as the March 6 NHL trade deadline approaches.

Management Weighs Tough Choices Ahead of Trade Deadline

With the deadline less than two weeks away, Panthers General Manager Bill Zito acknowledged the complexity of deciding Barkov’s status moving forward. Various scenarios exist, each carrying different implications for the team’s roster and salary cap.

“There’s any number of scenarios that can present themselves,” Panthers General Manager Bill Zito said Tuesday when asked about the possibility of putting Barkov on SELTIR. “You could have one where you want to preserve his (Barkov’s) ability to play in the playoffs. There’s a scenario in which it’s so far away (to make the playoffs), ‘I just don’t think we can do it’, in which case it doesn’t really matter — you could use that cap space. There’s one in which he’s ready to go sooner than you thought — I don’t think that [scenario] is real — I’m kind of making that one up. We just have to be poised to make decisions for each of the fact patterns that are presented to us, and we will be.”

Ongoing Recovery and Uncertain Return Timeline

Barkov has been participating in skating and individual drills over the past two months, though he has not yet rejoined full team practices. The Panthers have not provided a definite timeline for his return, making his availability for the final stretch of the regular season and playoffs uncertain.

His recovery was initially expected to take between seven and nine months, and it has been nearly five months since his surgery on September 26. Barkov’s value as a key contributor to the team is widely acknowledged.

“Obviously it goes without saying that [Barkov’s] a considerable addition to make to any team. So the sooner the better as far as I’m concerned,” Bill Zito said when discussing a possible return.

Implications for Florida Panthers’ Playoff Prospects

The decision on whether to shut down Aleksander Barkov for the remainder of the season will significantly influence Florida’s roster strategy and salary cap management heading into the playoffs. If placed on Season Ending LTIR, Barkov would be unavailable for the postseason, but the Panthers would gain $10 million in cap relief that could allow them to strengthen the lineup through trades or acquisitions.

Conversely, holding out hope for Barkov’s return risks cap complications without the guarantee he will be ready in time to impact meaningful games. As the Panthers sit outside a playoff position with only a quarter of the season left, management must balance patience with pragmatism to navigate this critical juncture.
