Brad Marchand’s Two Goals Lead Panthers Past Leafs 5-1

Brad Marchand scored twice Thursday night, helping the Florida Panthers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 in Sunrise, Florida. This game marked Florida’s first contest after the Olympic break and featured the Panthers striving to improve their playoff position while integrating strong offensive plays.

Key Contributions Support Panthers’ Win

In addition to Marchand’s two goals, Evan Rodrigues contributed both a goal and an assist, while Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk also found the back of the net for Florida. Anton Lundell played a pivotal role with two assists, and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was solid, stopping 28 shots to help halt the Leafs. Before the break, Florida was struggling with a 1-5-0 run.

Toronto’s lone goal came from John Tavares, and Joseph Woll made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs, who have now lost their first two games following the Olympic pause.

Panthers Dominate Early Lead

The Panthers quickly established control, scoring three times in the opening period. Marchand’s first goal came at 3:18, finishing off a play initiated by a pass from Lundell after a turnover forced by Matthew Knies of Toronto. Shortly after, Verhaeghe scored a power-play goal aided by a fortunate bounce off Toronto defenseman Troy Stecher during a clearing attempt. Nicolas Roy was serving a tripping penalty at the time.

Later in the first period, Rodrigues netted his first career short-handed goal, capitalizing on a strip of the puck from William Nylander in the neutral zone before breaking away to score.

Second Period Sees Defensive Resistance

The second period remained scoreless as the Maple Leafs ramped up their energy, putting pressure on Florida’s defense. Bobrovsky made two critical saves late in the period, including stops against Nylander and Simon Benoit, keeping the Panthers comfortably ahead 3-0 going into the final frame.

Tavares Sparks Brief Leafs Comeback

Toronto’s John Tavares opened the scoring in the third period with a power-play goal just 47 seconds in, assisted by Auston Matthews, whose pass marked the milestone of his 350th career assist. At that time, Florida’s Aaron Ekblad was serving a roughing penalty, giving Toronto the opportunity.

Florida had a goal overturned at 9:02 of the third after a video review determined the play was offside, but the Maple Leafs were unable to capitalize on power plays later in the period, thanks in part to Woll’s timely saves.

Marchand Seals the Game and Panthers Close Strong

With Woll pulled for an extra attacker, Marchand narrowly missed on one attempt but scored on his very next shot at 16:51, restoring the Panthers’ four-goal lead. Tkachuk then added an empty-net goal at 18:08, putting the game out of reach.

This win represented Florida’s first victory of the season over Toronto, breaking the Leafs’ previous two-game winning streak against the Panthers. The teams are scheduled to face each other once more on April 11 in Toronto, leaving room for Toronto to respond.
