Insider: Rangers’ $39M Star Vincent Trocheck Eyes Wild Trade

The New York Rangers appear poised for significant roster moves as the March 6 trade deadline approaches, with Vincent Trocheck emerging as a likely candidate for a trade. Former NHL center Mike Rupp, speaking on DFO Rundown Ep. 446, identified Trocheck as almost certain to be moved, highlighting the Minnesota Wild as the most probable destination for the $39 million contract center.

Rupp emphasized that although the exact details remain unclear, the connection between Trocheck and Minnesota has been widely discussed and is far from a secret. The Wild’s recent roster adjustments and current needs make them a prime contender to acquire Trocheck before the deadline.

Minnesota’s Strategic Motives and Trocheck’s Fit on the Wild

Mike Rupp explained that Minnesota’s struggles around penalty killing and its leadership gaps make Trocheck an ideal acquisition. Trocheck played a pivotal role on Team USA’s flawless 18-for-18 penalty kill during the Olympic final against Canada, underscoring his strength in this area.

With Bill Guerin at the helm as Minnesota’s general manager, who is known for aggressive trade maneuvers and strong ties to USA Hockey, the Wild have the appetite and the organizational mindset to pursue a move for Trocheck despite already giving up prospects to secure Quinn Hughes.

“I’m going to say Vincent Trocheck,” Rupp said. “I think it’s an absolute that he gets traded coming off. I mean, just even coming off of a — I think it’s not a secret. I was going to say it’s the worst kept secret, but no, it’s not that because everybody’s talked about him and linked him to Minnesota. I just, I don’t know what that looks like.”

“I know Minnesota has given up a lot already, for they kind of cleared out their their prospect pool to go get Quinn Hughes. I just think that it is the perfect fit for them. I think Bill Guerin has an appetite for doing something else big.”

“Quite frankly, for the last number of years, Minnesota’s PK has been awful,” Rupp said. “They’ve been terrible. So, like, we just saw this… So it makes sense.”

“I don’t know how creative Bill Gurien is going to have to be. The one thing I’ll say is, when Bill Gurien wants something, he goes and gets it. I think that that’s the absolute lock for me.”

Vincent Trocheck’s Contract and Trade Dynamics

Trocheck remains under contract through the 2028-29 season with a seven-year deal worth $39.37 million and a cap hit of $5.625 million annually. Currently, he holds a clause that limits trades to 12 teams this season, adding complexity to any potential deal. Though this no-trade clause restricts some options, it does not prevent a trade entirely, leaving the possibility open if negotiations succeed.

On-Ice Performance Amid Rangers’ Decline

Despite the Rangers’ disappointing performance this season, Vincent Trocheck has maintained solid production. Over 44 games, he has scored 12 goals and contributed 24 assists, totaling 37 points. Trocheck also ranks second on the team with 136 hits and holds a 56.5 percent faceoff win percentage, with average ice time close to 21 minutes per game.

The Rangers currently occupy last place in the Metropolitan Division with a 22-29-7 record, suffering a five-game losing streak and lagging 29 points behind the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes. Given the team’s struggles and fading playoff chances, management is reportedly considering moving valuable assets like Trocheck to realign their strategy.

Challenges and Outlook for the Trade Completion

While there is strong speculation about Trocheck’s departure, obstacles such as his no-trade clause and contract length add complexity to the process. However, Minnesota’s urgent need for penalty-killing help and leadership aligns with Trocheck’s strengths, potentially making him a valuable trade asset for the Wild’s rebuilding ambitions.

If Bill Guerin commits to pursuing Trocheck, his track record suggests he will explore creative options to facilitate the transaction, which could reshape the Wild’s lineup and bolster their defensive and special teams play as they look toward the future of the NHL season.
