The Buffalo Sabres pursued a trade for St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline but were unable to reach an agreement. Despite serious discussions during the week, the Sabres and Blues could not find common ground on the required package, leaving Buffalo without the sought-after player.
Trade Negotiations Fall Short Due to Return Demands
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Blues were firm on what they wanted in return for the young center.
“It’s believed St Louis/Buffalo went the distance on Thomas trade talks. Sounds like the Sabres aren’t willing to part with the necessary pieces. (Prospects, Player, 1st). Still teams nibbling, but the Blues are firm in what the return needs to be for the young center,”
Dreger reported.
Thomas had a strong 2022-23 season, posting 21 goals and 60 assists, but his production this year has not matched those numbers as the Blues have struggled overall, though the team’s difficulties cannot be blamed solely on Thomas.
Implications for the Sabres’ Playoff Push
The Sabres’ interest in Thomas signals their belief in their ability to compete this season, as they have dramatically improved since December and are close to ending a 14-year playoff drought. Although the blockbuster trade did not happen, Buffalo could still be hunting for roster improvements before the deadline.
The failed trade attempt highlights the tense and uncertain nature of late-season dealings, where teams weigh short-term gains against long-term assets. While Thomas won’t be joining Buffalo, the Sabres remain poised to make moves to strengthen their lineup in their quest for playoff success.
