Sergei Bobrovsky Trade Rumors Heat Up: Vegas, Carolina Lead

Sergei Bobrovsky, who played a crucial role in leading the Florida Panthers to consecutive Stanley Cup titles over the past two seasons, now faces an uncertain future. With the Panthers trailing the final Eastern Conference wildcard spot by 10 points midway through the 2025-26 campaign and Bobrovsky entering unrestricted free agency this summer, speculation is mounting about a possible trade before the March 6 deadline.

Reports from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun indicate that the Panthers are prepared to explore trade options for several pending free agents, including Bobrovsky, AJ Greer, Tomas Nosek, Jeff Petry, and Daniil Tarasov. The team’s current position in the standings and roster uncertainties have prompted this shift toward “sell mode.”

Teams Showing Interest in Bobrovsky, Vegas and Carolina in the Lead

LeBrun identifies a handful of potential suitors for Bobrovsky, with particular emphasis on the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes as the front-runners. Both franchises face goaltending challenges that Bobrovsky could address effectively.

“The Vegas Golden Knights could make sense. All of their goalies are outside the top 30 in the league in save percentage and goals saved above expected,”

LeBrun noted, explaining Vegas’s incentive to improve its netminder situation.

Similarly, Carolina has shown interest in reinforcing their goaltending depth.

“The Carolina Hurricanes need to at least pick up the phone and inquire. Brandon Bussi has been an awesome story, but shouldn’t the Canes do all they can to make sure of their goaltending if this is finally their year? According to league sources, the Canes checked in regarding the St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington earlier this week, though it doesn’t seem to have gone anywhere.”

LeBrun further emphasized,

“All things being equal, Vegas and Carolina make the most sense if Bobrovsky moves.”

Panthers’ Injury Woes and Fatigue Contribute to Slipping Standings

Florida’s current struggles partly stem from an exhausted roster that has not enjoyed a full offseason in several years. Since 2023, the Panthers have made three straight Stanley Cup Final appearances, claiming two championships, but the physical toll is apparent.

Injuries have devastated the squad this season. Captain Sasha Barkov has been sidelined for the entire year after undergoing surgery to repair ACL and MCL tears in his right knee, and Matthew Tkachuk missed the first half of the season. Other key players—including Brad Marchand, Seth Jones, and Dmitry Kulikov—have also faced significant absences.

Following the Olympic break, Florida’s performance declined, highlighted by a 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. With just 21 games remaining, the Panthers’ playoff chances appear slim. Yet Bobrovsky, despite his struggles this year with a .873 save percentage—the lowest of his career—remains a wildcard thanks to his reputation as “Playoff Bob.”

Trade Deadline Approaches; Panthers Likely to Move Some Veterans

Given the team’s situation, general manager Bill Zito is expected to trade certain pending unrestricted free agents before the deadline approaches this Friday at 3 p.m. ET. Whether this process will include Bobrovsky, one of the franchise’s most recognizable players, remains to be seen.

The potential trade of a key veteran like Bobrovsky would mark a significant moment for the Panthers, signaling a shift toward rebuilding or reconfiguring after a period of sustained success. Should the trade materialize, the receiving team will gain an experienced goaltender capable of elevating their postseason prospects.
