On Tuesday, the Vegas Golden Knights enhanced their roster by acquiring winger Cole Smith from the Nashville Predators, aiming to deepen their lineup before Friday’s NHL trade deadline. The trade involved Vegas sending a 2028 third-round draft pick and defenseman prospect Cristoffer Sedoff to Nashville in exchange for Smith.
Cole Smith’s Role and Career Journey
Smith, 30, has contributed 10 points during this season’s 43 games and accumulated 62 career points over five NHL seasons, all with Nashville. Standing at 6-foot-3, he adds notable size and physical presence to the Golden Knights’ bottom six forwards and offers valuable minutes on the penalty kill. Beyond his statistics, Smith brings intangible qualities that were highlighted by hockey journalist Jack Williams.
Cole Smith is a guy that’s going to give you the stuff that doesn’t appear on stat sheets,
said Jack Williams, a Nashville-based writer for The Hockey News and host of the Locked On Predators Podcast.
Undrafted, Smith’s rise to the NHL reflects hard work and perseverance, starting from college and progressing through the minor leagues. Williams elaborated on Smith’s path and mindset.
He signed out of college, started all the way down in the ECHL and had to work his way up into the NHL,
Williams said.
He does have that underdog mentality and that effort to work hard and get to where he deserves.

Adding Depth for Playoff Challenges
The Golden Knights are counting on Smith’s determined mindset to complement their Stanley Cup ambitions. The team continues to be a strong contender in the Western Conference and requires resilient depth players to endure the physical intensity of a playoff run. Williams emphasized the need for such players alongside star talents.
You have your All-Stars that are obviously going to push the way — your Jack Eichels, your Mark Stones,
Williams said.
But at the same time, you need those bigger guys that are going to be able to take pushes here and there and add a depth scoring push further down the lineup.
Smith’s style of play is seen as a good fit for coach Bruce Cassidy’s system, which prioritizes physical engagement and disciplined two-way hockey.
Cole Smith definitely brings that physicality,
Williams noted.
He’s one of those bigger forwards you throw into the lineup, and that kind of gels with what Bruce Cassidy looks for in having a physical team.
Immediate Impact and Future Roster Moves
Smith joined the Golden Knights in Detroit and made his debut for Vegas less than 24 hours after the trade. While this acquisition may not be a blockbuster compared to previous deadline moves, it directly addresses the team’s need for additional forward depth amid injuries testing the lineup.
With center William Karlsson still sidelined, the Golden Knights continue assessing their roster and might pursue further transactions before the noon deadline on Friday. Strengthening the team’s lineup remains a priority as Vegas aims to maintain momentum toward another postseason run.
