However, his time with the Ducks was short-lived as he was reassigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals, for most of the season. On 2 March 2015, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he continued to develop as a player.
Breakthrough (2017–Present)
Karlsson’s career took a significant turn when he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL expansion draft. He quickly became a key player for the team, centering a line with Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault. During the Golden Knights’ inaugural season, Karlsson scored a career-high 43 goals, setting a record for the most goals scored by a player in an expansion team’s first season. His outstanding performance earned him a nomination for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which he won, becoming the first player since Wayne Gretzky to achieve this honor in their team’s inaugural season.
