Blue Jackets Shut Down Kent Johnson Trade Rumors Ahead of Deadline

The Columbus Blue Jackets recently scratched Kent Johnson from their lineup, sparking speculation about his trade status before Friday’s NHL deadline. However, the Blue Jackets have made it clear that Johnson will remain with the team despite ongoing rumors.

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, several NHL teams have inquired about Johnson following his absence from the roster, but Columbus is not entertaining offers.

“Teams have called on Columbus Blue Jackets center Kent Johnson after his recent scratch, but the answer from the Blue Jackets has been that they’re not interested in moving him,”

LeBrun reported.

“Johnson is having a down year, but the fifth overall pick from the 2021 draft is still only 23, and Columbus very much still believes in the player he can be.”

Struggles on Ice Affecting Johnson’s Performance

This season has been difficult for the young center, whose production has fallen sharply from his promising rookie campaign. Over 57 games, Johnson has scored only six goals and added 12 assists, totaling 18 points. His defensive impact has also been limited, and his average ice time has dropped to just under 14 minutes per game as he tries to regain form.

By contrast, Johnson’s 2021-22 season was a breakthrough, with 68 games played and 57 points, including 24 goals. The stark decline in his effectiveness this year has created a challenging situation for Columbus as they decide how to manage his development and roster role.

Remaining Committed to Johnson’s Future with the Team

Despite his struggles, the Blue Jackets appear confident that Johnson still has significant potential. Interest from other NHL clubs indicates that he remains a valued prospect around the league, which supports Columbus’s decision to hold onto him rather than trade him before the deadline.

The decision to scratch Johnson recently likely served as a temporary measure to give him time to rest and reset rather than signal a permanent move. With the trade deadline approaching, the Blue Jackets’ stance suggests their plans continue to involve Johnson as a core player moving forward.
