Rangers Trade Brennan Othmann to Flames for Fresh Start

The New York Rangers finalized a trade on Friday, sending forward Brennan Othmann to the Calgary Flames in exchange for prospect Jacob Battaglia. The move marks another instance of the Rangers moving on from underperforming first-round draft picks, as the team seeks to reshape its prospect pool and provide Othmann a chance for a fresh start elsewhere.

Othmann, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, once stood as one of New York’s most promising prospects. However, under new coach Mike Sullivan, the 23-year-old forward fell out of favor due to defensive issues and inconsistent production, leading to widespread speculation about his departure well before the trade deadline.

General Manager Chris Drury Comments on the Outcome

Rangers general manager Chris Drury acknowledged Othmann’s effort but explained the need for change:

“He’s a terrific kid and worked extremely hard to try and make it work here. For a number of reasons, it just didn’t. To no one’s fault,”

Drury said.

“I think he’d been looking for a new opportunity, and really wanted to give him that chance. Just like any other deal, not going to give him away. Think he’s a good young player and we were able to get the prospect we did with Calgary and made the deal. Certainly, no hard feeling on our end and wish him luck.”

This trade aims to benefit both parties, giving Othmann an opportunity to regain confidence in Calgary, a team struggling near the bottom of the Western Conference.

Challenges That Led to Othmann’s Departure from the Rangers

While Othmann excelled in junior hockey, his transition to the NHL was marked by difficulties. Sullivan quickly lost patience with Othmann’s defensive shortcomings during training camp, which diminished the player’s confidence—an ongoing concern throughout his time in New York. This lack of trust was reflected in his limited ice time; Othmann suited up for just 17 games this season, mostly on the bottom line, managing only one goal and two assists across 42 NHL appearances.

Despite impressive junior numbers, including 50 goals in 66 games with Flint during the 2021-22 OHL season and international success with Canada’s World Junior Championships teams, Othmann has struggled to establish himself as the high-scoring power forward the Rangers hoped for.

Jacob Battaglia: The Prospect Heading to New York

In return, the Rangers acquired Jacob Battaglia, a 19-year-old winger selected 62nd overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. Battaglia has demonstrated scoring ability in the Ontario Hockey League with Kingston and Flint, recording 40 goals in 68 games last season and accumulating 43 points (26 goals, 17 assists) in 58 games this year. After being traded to Flint, Battaglia has continued a strong offensive pace, netting nine goals in his most recent 13 games while playing alongside Rangers prospect Nathan Aspinall.

“Jacob Battaglia has been playing with Nathan Aspinall since Flint traded for him, and has nine goals in his past 13 games,”

said Jess Rubenstein of The Prospect Park.

“High hockey IQ. Despite that his stats look like he is just a goal scorer, has excellent passing skills. But at best, he’s a high energy third liner who will fit well with Noah Laba and Will Cuylle. I don’t see him as a center at the NHL level.”

Battaglia signed a three-year entry-level contract with Calgary in March 2025 and is eligible to begin his professional career next season. He is considered a hardworking player with a powerful shot, though observers note that his skating may limit his advancement at higher levels of play.

“Jacob Battaglia, acquired by the Rangers, was going to be an honorable mention in my upcoming Flames pool ranking, though he’ll be higher in a thinner Rangers pool. He’s a hard-shooting winger with good secondary skill. Below-average skating could be a limiter up levels.”

Recent Trends in Rangers’ First-Round Draft Picks

Othmann’s trade reflects a broader pattern of challenges for the Rangers with their first-round selections over recent years. Several high picks from 2017 to 2019, such as Lias Andersson (7th overall, 2017), Vitali Kravtsov (9th overall, 2018), Filip Chytil (21st overall, 2017), K’Andre Miller (22nd overall, 2018), Nils Lundkvist (28th overall, 2018), and Kaapo Kakko (2nd overall, 2019), no longer play with New York or have struggled to make a lasting impact.

Meanwhile, recent picks Alexis Lafreniere (1st overall, 2020) and Braden Schneider (19th overall, 2020) remain in the Rangers lineup but were reportedly considered trade candidates prior to the deadline. The 2024 first-round pick Gabe Perreault is currently a rookie, and EJ Emery, selected 30th overall in 2025, is progressing in his college hockey career at North Dakota University.

Implications and What Lies Ahead for the Rangers

This trade highlights the Rangers’ ongoing organizational adjustments under general manager Chris Drury, who has also added prospects Liam Greentree and Aidan Thompson through recent trades. The swap of Othmann for Battaglia reflects a strategic shift toward players who might better fit the team’s retooling efforts and future plans.

For Brennan Othmann, joining the Flames presents a crucial opportunity to revive a career that has yet to meet its early high expectations. Calgary’s current position near the bottom of the Western Conference suggests that Othmann will have chances to earn more playing time and show his capabilities at the NHL level.

The Rangers, meanwhile, will monitor Battaglia’s development closely as they continue to refine their prospect pool, hoping that fresh talent can return the team to competitiveness and stability in the seasons to come.
