On Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational held at Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida, 24-year-old golfer Akshay Bhatia secured his third PGA Tour victory in a dramatic playoff against Daniel Berger. Bhatia dedicated this meaningful win to his late niece, Mia, who died in December 2025 at the age of five.
During the final moments of the tournament, Bhatia noticed a rainbow appearing on the 18th hole, which he said reminded him deeply of Mia and gave him a special sense of support.
Remembering Mia’s Courageous Fight Against a Rare Disorder
Mia battled pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency (PDCD), a rare metabolic disorder that affects carbohydrate processing due to enzyme deficiencies. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, children with early onset of this condition often do not survive past early childhood. Mia’s struggle was a testament to her strength and resilience.
“She was a fighter for a long time,”
Bhatia shared.
“She wasn’t supposed to make it past a year old.”
Personal Reflections on Loss and Celebration
Bhatia spoke openly about the emotional timing of Mia’s passing, which coincided with his wedding day to his wife, Presleigh, in December 2025. Despite the heartbreak, he recalled moments of peace during that difficult week.
“It was the day of our wedding, she passed away,”
Bhatia said. “She didn’t make it.”
“We tried everything and had a great support system, but there are so many cool things about that week,”
he added.
“She stayed in the house where we got married. It was called Heaven on Earth.”
Bhatia also highlighted Mia’s joy during her final days.
“She loved the sand, she got to see everyone,”
he remarked.
“I told my sister I’ve been thinking about her for a long time after she passed and dedicated this one for her.”
The Significance of Bhatia’s Victory and Dedication
This win is a significant milestone in Akshay Bhatia’s career, symbolizing not only athletic achievement but also a heartfelt tribute to his niece’s memory. The emotional nature of the victory adds depth to his journey on the PGA Tour, reflecting a mix of grief, hope, and determination. Bhatia’s dedication is likely to inspire both fans and fellow athletes as he continues his professional path while honoring Mia’s legacy.
