Tommy Fleetwood Focuses on Play as Family Stays Safe in Dubai

Tommy Fleetwood is competing in PGA Tour events across the United States while his family remains stranded in Dubai amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The English golfer shared his heartfelt concerns during a press conference at The Players Championship, emphasizing his family’s safety as conflict intensifies near Iran following airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel.

Fleetwood highlighted the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in maintaining security amid the turmoil, calling their response to the situation “unbelievable.” Dubai’s partial reopening of airspace offers hope for his family’s travel, though no definite plans have been confirmed.

Family’s Well-Being and Travel Uncertain, But Safety Assured

Speaking openly about the predicament, Fleetwood said,

“They’re still in Dubai at the moment. Yeah, it’s been a strange time. I can honestly say that my — you know, my family have been very, very safe. I think the UAE, the country, have done an unbelievable job at making everybody feel very safe and very secure and handling that.”

Despite the ongoing uncertainty, Fleetwood mentioned that his family is “supposed to travel soon” whenever conditions permit. He stressed,

“the main thing has been that they are safe.”

He added,

“I honestly can’t speak highly enough about how well the country has handled things for the people that are over there. Just I haven’t experienced it. I’ve been over here.”

Performance on Tour Amid Personal Challenges

Currently ranked third in the Official World Golf Ranking, Fleetwood’s early season showed promise with respectable finishes tied for fourth and seventh at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational. However, last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he struggled with two rounds of 76, finishing tied for 49th at six over par.

Addressing speculation that worries about his family might be affecting his game, Fleetwood dismissed the notion, saying,

“I don’t really like to make excuses. I definitely won’t be one to say whether it has a role in how I play or not. I think Bay Hill’s hard enough, you know,”

adding with a laugh.

He also explained his mindset during difficult times in competition:

“But I think you just do the best with whatever cards you’re dealt with and try and just, when I’m working or playing or practicing, just throw myself into that.”

Regarding the situation of his loved ones, Fleetwood expressed hope despite the uneasy circumstances:

“No doubt I would love my family and everybody that’s involved at the moment or in and around the area to be in a sort of more comfortable situation, but like I say, they have handled it unbelievably well. All I can say is that my family have felt very, very safe.”

Looking Ahead with Determination at TPC Sawgrass

Fleetwood aims to turn around his recent struggles at the upcoming tournament at TPC Sawgrass, where he hopes to achieve the most significant victory of his career. He stressed resilience in his approach, saying,

“I think every week is a fresh week. I hope I do have a really good week this week after sort of struggling a bit last week. I will definitely have worse weeks in my career than finishing 49th at Bay Hill. I know that.”

He further explained his practice habits and form recovery:

“But, no, I think, again, you try and I think you try and work and you try and practice to have your game at like I highly consistent level. And then I guess recently just when I’ve had a poor week like my game has come around and I’ve done things well and I played well the next week.”

Reflecting on past success, Fleetwood tied for 14th at The Players Championship last year, underscoring his capability to contend under pressure.

Significance of Family Safety Amid Global Conflict

As unrest in the Middle East continues, Tommy Fleetwood’s focus on his game while his family remains in Dubai highlights the personal challenges faced by athletes with loved ones caught in uncertain situations. The United Arab Emirates’ management of regional safety has been crucial in providing Fleetwood peace of mind as he competes. How soon his family will reunite with him in the United States remains unclear, but their safety remains paramount.

Fleetwood’s ability to maintain professionalism and determination despite these hardships speaks to his resilience, suggesting he will remain a strong competitor on the PGA Tour through turbulent times.
