Paddy Pimblett suffered a unanimous decision loss to Justin Gaethje in his recent interim title fight but remains recognized as a top contender in the UFC lightweight division. UFC president Dana White praised Pimblett’s toughness and durability in the bout, acknowledging the challenging opponent he faced.
He obviously took some big shots from a guy who knocks everybody out,
White said.
He showed he is tough, he is durable, especially against Gaethje and you’re eating those punches from him.
White Critiques Pimblett’s Strategy but Sees Potential
White noted Pimblett’s game plan might have been less effective as the fight progressed and suggested a change in tactics could have made a difference. He encouraged adaptability, especially in later rounds when previous strategies aren’t succeeding.
I don’t think that his gameplan was the greatest,
White explained.
When it starts to not work at some point you’ve got to say: ‘You know what, it’s the third round, I’ve got two rounds left, I might want to try and take him down and submit him here.’
Despite his critique, White believes the bout did not negatively impact Pimblett’s career longevity, highlighting his ability to endure significant punishment.
You don’t ever want to see guys take too much punishment but I don’t know if tonight affected Paddy’s longevity in his career at all. He showed tonight that he’s tough, he’s durable and he can take a punch. He can take a lot of punches actually,
White added.

Potential Opponents and Division Dynamics Post-Fight
Winning the interim belt positioned Gaethje for a future clash with undisputed champion Ilia Topuria, while Pimblett now faces a range of strong competitors in the division. Leading contender Arman Tsarukyan, who previously voiced frustration over Pimblett receiving the interim title shot ahead of him, has openly challenged the British fighter.
That’s what happens when you’re gifted opportunities and pushed up the rankings artificially, a completely undeserved title shot for Paddy,
Tsarukyan stated on social media.
Congratulations to Justin. He showed real heart, and unlike others he’ll step up and take the fight with me. Respect.
This tension between Pimblett and Tsarukyan could make their potential match highly anticipated, though it would represent a demanding challenge for Pimblett’s return.
Opportunities for Pimblett’s Comeback Among Top Fighters
Beyond Tsarukyan, Pimblett could face other elite opponents such as Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway, who are ranked second and third in the lightweight division. Oliveira and Holloway are scheduled to fight each other in March, which might open a prime opportunity for Pimblett to return after recovery by battling the winner of that matchup.
Implications for Pimblett and the Lightweight Division
Pimblett’s resilience in the Justin Gaethje fight cements his status as a durable and exciting fighter within the UFC lightweight ranks. Despite the setback, his future matchups against top contenders could shape the division’s landscape significantly. How Pimblett adapts and chooses his next opponents will be critical to his resurgence and potential to re-enter title contention.
