UFC’s Epic Streaming Debut on Paramount+ Stuns Fans

UFC CEO Dana White expressed immense satisfaction following his organization’s first weekend on the new streaming platform Paramount+. The highlight came during UFC 324 at T-Mobile Arena, where Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett delivered an unforgettable main event that attracted significant attention to the UFC streaming deal debut.

Thrilling Main Event Showcases Intense Competition

The clash between Gaethje and Pimblett was a fierce battle, described by White as an “absolute dogfight.” White remarked,

“A war. Much respect to those guys. I didn’t know Paddy Pimblett had a chin like that.”

Gaethje dominated early rounds, knocking Pimblett down with strong right hands and maintaining pressure throughout the full 25 minutes to secure a unanimous decision victory and claim the interim lightweight title.

Despite the early setbacks, Pimblett kept advancing aggressively, responding with his own damaging strikes as the fight progressed. At the weigh-ins, Pimblett had confidently predicted a knockout over Gaethje, according to White:

“He came up to me at weigh-ins and told me he was going to knock (Gaethje) out,”

White said.

The more shots he took, I figured he would have to try to get him down and submit him, but he never abandoned that game plan.”

Successful Shift to Streaming Model Reflects Strong Viewer Engagement

The intense matchup contributed to an exhilarating start for the UFC’s shift away from pay-per-view toward streaming. Fans responded enthusiastically, and White revealed that CBS and Paramount+ partners were equally pleased with the event’s early performance, marking the kickoff of a substantial $7.7 billion deal.

White shared,

“We’ll have numbers on Tuesday or Wednesday, but it suceeded expectations beyond belief for Paramount,”

adding,

“We know it killed it. We just don’t know the exact number yet.”

He also noted the upbeat attitudes from partners, saying,

“It’s unexplainable how enthusiastic and incredible these guys have been. We have a real good feeling it’s going to be a great relationship the next seven years.”

Foundations Laid for New Zuffa Boxing Promotion on Paramount+

In addition to UFC 324, White’s recently launched Zuffa Boxing promotion had its debut on Paramount+ at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Although the initial card was modest, it is intended to establish a strong base that could disrupt traditional boxing events in the coming years.

Production Challenges Marred But Didn’t Overshadow the Weekend

The weekend was not without its issues. The transition from pay-per-view caused commercial timing problems, a botched Bruce Buffer introduction occurred, and a referee suffered a torn ACL inside the cage. Additionally, some controversies arose from betting questions, politically sensitive remarks by fighters, and confusion among athletes about the new payment arrangements under the streaming agreement.

Improvements at Meta Apex and Future Ambitions

Amid the energy of the weekend, UFC also unveiled significant renovations to the Meta Apex facility, which will soon expand to host nearly 1,000 spectators. Despite the excitement, White remained grounded, emphasizing a long-term perspective rather than immediate celebration.

White stated,

“It will mean something to me at the end of the year,”

and explained,

“I don’t think like that. I’m not the type to think, ‘Oh, what a special day for me.’ The way I look at it is we are just going into a new deal and have a lot of work to do, especially on the boxing side. After Christmas, I usually go away for like 10 days and that’s when I start to think about how the year was and what we’re going to do in 2027.”

Looking Ahead: Historic White House Event in the Works

White’s next major focus is an ambitious event planned for June 14 on the White House lawn. Performances from UFC 324, including Gaethje’s standout effort, could have earned fighters valuable placement on the card. Gaethje is expected to face lightweight champion Ilia Topuria here in a likely title unification match following his interim championship win.

Gaethje confidently declared,

“There’s no way they can keep me off the card now,”

affirming his readiness for this historic fight.

Pimblett’s Resilience Points to Future Opportunities

Although Pimblett experienced his first UFC loss, his display of grit, toughness, and charisma signals future promise. Gaethje remarked on Pimblett’s performance and mindset, emphasizing the learning curve involved in the sport:

“You have to learn these lessons,”

Gaethje said.

“His mindset going into that fight was not good. False confidence will kill you every time and that’s what he had. You cannot approach this sport like that and he’ll learn. He’s really good. He’s so tough. He’ll get there soon, no doubt.”

Overall, the UFC’s transition to a streaming-focused model, bolstered by exciting fights and strategic expansions, marks a significant chapter in the organization’s evolution. Fans and partners alike will be watching closely to see how these developments reshape the sport’s future.
