Adesanya Hails Gaethje vs Pimblett as UFC’s Game-Changer

Israel Adesanya, former UFC middleweight champion, praised the recent interim lightweight title bout between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett, calling it a fitting start for the UFC’s new era under Paramount. The fight took place last Saturday in the UFC 324 main event, marking both the first event of the year and the premier event of this partnership.

Over five intense rounds, Gaethje and Pimblett battled fiercely, with Gaethje securing a unanimous decision victory. Adesanya compared the matchup’s significance and excitement to one of the most legendary fights in UFC history.

Significance and Comparisons to Iconic UFC Fights

When Dana White announced the Gaethje vs Pimblett fight, many fans criticized the decision, pointing out that Pimblett had yet to defeat a top-10 ranked opponent. After the fight, UFC veteran Josh Barnett described it as

“one of the worst main events,”

reflecting mixed reactions from the MMA community.

Despite some negative feedback, Adesanya drew parallels between this contest and the historic 2005 fight between Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin at The Ultimate Fighter 1 finale. That bout, known for its intense action, was considered by White as

“the most important fight in UFC history”

and is credited with significantly boosting the sport’s popularity.

Adesanya suggested that Gaethje vs Pimblett could serve a similar purpose for the UFC’s new chapter on Paramount. Observing Pimblett’s durability, he remarked, “This guy is a zombie,” during his reaction on YouTube.

He added,

“The main event was sick. This is perfect because on the Spike TV deal Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar showed out and made the whole world go ‘what the f—?’.”

Adesanya continued,

“This is like part two I guess because it’s a new deal with Paramount and then the main event showed out, I’m sure everyone watched this, a lot of eyes on this and the main event delivered which is what you want.”

Future Paths for Gaethje and Pimblett After the Bout

Following his victory, Justin Gaethje became the first-ever two-time interim lightweight champion in UFC history and is now set to unify the title against the current undisputed champion, Ilia Topuria. This upcoming fight is expected to unify the belt and determine the undisputed lightweight king.

On the other hand, Paddy Pimblett will likely need to rebuild his momentum with several wins before earning another title opportunity. His next opponents and matchups could be crucial for returning him to championship contention.

Potential Next Opponents for Paddy Pimblett

One of the most logical next steps for Pimblett could be a fight against fellow lightweight Dan Hooker. The two have an ongoing feud, and a matchup would draw significant fan interest regardless of Hooker’s result against Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 325. Such a contest could help Pimblett regain his footing in the division and set the stage for future high-profile bouts.
