Following Paddy Pimblett’s unanimous decision loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 324 in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White expressed surprise at the Liverpool fighter’s resilience. The match, held Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena, showcased Pimblett’s notable durability despite facing a highly skilled opponent. White’s observations highlighted Pimblett’s toughness in a grueling fight that kept fans engaged throughout.
White’s Assessment of Pimblett’s Performance and Strategy
In a post-fight conversation with reporters including those from The Mac Life, White remarked on Pimblett’s unexpected ability to withstand heavy punches.
“I didn’t know Paddy Pimblett had a chin like that till tonight,”
White said. He described the fight as a “dogfight and a war,” acknowledging the intense physical challenge both fighters endured. White also mentioned that Pimblett was sent directly to the hospital for evaluation, while Gaethje declined treatment, assuring officials he was fine after many similar battles.
Despite his praise for Pimblett’s tenacity, White noted that the fighter’s game plan could have been more adaptable.
“I don’t think that his gameplan was the greatest,”
White admitted, suggesting that Pimblett might have needed to shift tactics during the later rounds. He elaborated,
“You’re eating those punches from him. It’s one thing to say, ‘Listen, I believe in my durability, I believe in my chin, and I’m going to go toe to toe with this guy.’ But when it starts to not work, at some point, you’ve got to say, ‘It’s the third round. I got two rounds left. I might want to try to take him down and submit him here.’”
Impact on Pimblett’s UFC Future and Gaethje’s Reputation
The fight further solidified Justin Gaethje’s standing as a relentless and fan-favorite contender known for intense matchups. For Pimblett, the performance against a seasoned opponent like Gaethje is likely to influence discussions about his future bouts within the lightweight division. His ability to endure and stay competitive in such a challenging fight underscores his potential, even as strategic adjustments remain necessary for advancing in the UFC ranks.
