Michael Morales, the undefeated top contender in the UFC welterweight division, has made it clear how he would face Islam Makhachev in a potential UFC title defense. Morales, who continues to rise at 170 pounds, dismissed the idea of showing deference to Makhachev despite the champion’s impressive reign. The 26-year-old Ecuadorian secured his 19th professional MMA win recently with a knockout of Sean Brady at Madison Square Garden, positioning himself as one of the leading challengers in the division.
Morales spoke candidly about his mindset ahead of a possible showdown against the Dagestani champion.
“I won’t show him much respect,”
Morales stated during an appearance on MMA Junkie’s Hablemos MMA show.
“He’s an athlete just like me. He’s a person just like me. He bleeds just like me. I just see him as a person who I want to take the title from.”
He expanded on his determination, emphasizing that Makhachev’s legacy does not influence his own ambitions.
“Sure, he has his legacy and history, but that’s his, not mine,”
Morales said.
“I’ve worked hard to get what I have, so I won’t give him that respect of, ‘Oh, he’s the champion. I have to give him all the praise.’”
Continuing in the same vein, Morales asserted his singular focus on capturing the title regardless of the opponent.
“No, I also want to be champion. I’ve set in my head that I’m going to work hard to take the title away from somebody. That’s my dream, and that’s my priority. I don’t care who I have to beat.”
He concluded,
“I’m not going to idolize anyone. I want to take the title. I don’t care if it’s against Makhachev or anyone else. I want to be champion, and I’m preparing very hard to do that.”
Islam Makhachev’s Recent Triumph and Welterweight Title Reign
Islam Makhachev, who claimed the UFC welterweight title last November after vacating his lightweight belt, has already demonstrated his consistent dominance at 170 pounds. His victory over Jack Della Maddalena marked the beginning of a new chapter in the welterweight division, reinforcing Makhachev’s status as one of the sport’s elite fighters. Yet, despite his success, challengers like Morales are eager to test the champion’s resolve and take the title from him.

Makhachev’s Preferred Opponent for His Upcoming Title Defense
For now, Morales and other contenders will likely have to wait before earning a shot at Islam Makhachev’s welterweight crown. The champion has expressed a preference to defend his title against former champion Kamaru Usman next, prioritizing a matchup with the legendary competitor over rising contenders like Morales or Ian Machado Garry. This decision has sparked mixed reactions within the MMA community, as some question whether Usman’s recent performances justify an immediate title opportunity, given he has only won once since 2021.
The UFC’s response to Makhachev’s proposed defense against Usman remains uncertain, leaving the division’s future matchups open for speculation. Until then, contenders such as Morales will continue to train and await their chance to challenge for the prestigious welterweight belt.
