Islam Makhachev Unfazed by Ian Garry’s Wrestling Push

Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry seem headed toward a showdown after Garry began focusing on wrestling training in Georgia. While Garry is actively competing for a welterweight title shot, the UFC has yet to confirm Makhachev’s first defense of his championship. This wrestling challenge from Garry aims to position him as a top contender against Makhachev in the UFC welterweight division.

Ian Machado Garry’s Strategic Move to Georgia for Wrestling

The timing of Ian Machado Garry’s decision to train in Georgia has drawn heightened interest amid the evolving welterweight ranks. Since Makhachev secured the welterweight title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena, many anticipated his first defense would be against former champion Kamaru Usman. However, with the UFC’s plans unclear and Garry rising in the ranks, his choice to train in Georgia signals a calculated effort to sharpen his wrestling in preparation for a possible title clash.

Machado Garry explained why he chose Georgia for his training during an interview with MMA Pros Pick, noting the benefit of working with top wrestling coaches. He said,

“We had one of the guys reach out to us before we won in UFC Qatar and said, ‘If you are coming, let me come and teach you,’ and I said, ‘Okay.’ If I’m fighting Islam [Makhachev], this is the place I need to come and get people who have trained for years.”

By immersing himself in this wrestling hub, Garry hopes the intensive practice and technique refinement will be decisive in any upcoming matchup with Makhachev.

Ian Machado Garry Commends the Hospitality and Environment of Georgian Gym

While training far from home, Ian Machado Garry has expressed appreciation for the warmth and friendliness shown by everyone at the Georgian gym. Adjusting to a new cultural setting can be difficult, but Garry approached it with enthusiasm and a desire to learn from experienced wrestlers.

As the UFC’s No. 2 ranked welterweight, he spoke about the positive reception during his stay:

“I’ve seen a lot of people. I can’t walk from here to the hotel or even go in the toiler hotel without people stopping me, which is great,”

Machado Garry told MMA Pros Pick.

“It’s awesome. They all come up, they all have such a big smile on their face.”

Islam Makhachev Remains Confident Despite Garry’s Wrestling Focus

Despite Garry’s concentrated efforts to enhance his wrestling skills in Georgia, Islam Makhachev remains undeterred. Makhachev, who holds a reputation for elite grappling combined with striking, dismissed the notion that a few months of training can close the gap between their abilities.

Last year, Makhachev dominated Jack Della Maddalena on the ground to claim the welterweight title, showcasing his comprehensive control. Regarding Garry’s additional wrestling development, Makhachev said it will likely not affect the outcome if they face off.

He cautioned against relying on short-term improvements in wrestling, saying that it could be a serious misstep:

“This is a mistake for fighters to go to some training camp for two or three months before the fight in order to get ready for the fight,”

Makhachev told Ushatayka (translated).

“It’s in reverse. This plays into such a cruel mistake because the person who goes somewhere for two to three months to prepare and starts to believe in his skills. And then this doesn’t work.”

Adding further, he remarked,

“In two or three months, it’s impossible to learn how to wrestle. This is what you have to do in your childhood. Many, many years.”

Impact of Wrestling Challenge on UFC Welterweight Division

The ongoing rivalry between Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry highlights the intricate chess match unfolding within the UFC welterweight division. Garry’s intensive wrestling training in Georgia demonstrates his commitment to overcoming a champion known for his grappling prowess. Meanwhile, Makhachev’s calm assurance reflects his confidence in the foundation built over years of experience.

This wrestling challenge adds tension to the division’s landscape, leaving fans and analysts eager to see how the matchmaking will unfold. The UFC’s forthcoming decisions regarding Makhachev’s title defense could set the stage for a defining battle in the welterweight category.
