Jon Jones Demands UFC Release Amid Dana White Feud

Jon Jones, the retired former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, has officially requested his release from the UFC. This development follows a public dispute with UFC president Dana White surrounding contract talks for the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House and White’s critical comments regarding Jones’s fitness and reliability.

Conflict Emerges Over White House Fight Card Participation

Jones announced his release request through a message posted on X, reacting to Dana White’s remarks during the UFC 326 post-fight press conference on June 14. White asserted that Jones was never considered for the White House event fight card and emphasized that negotiations with him had been minimal or non-existent. White elaborated that the UFC had no intention of including Jones, despite some discussions with the fighter’s representatives.

White justified his stance by pointing to Jones’s history of legal troubles and questioned his physical condition. At the press event, White said,

“I’ve told you why I wouldn’t do it. And No. 2, some guy with Meta glasses on filmed him talking about his hips being so bad. I don’t know if you guys saw that flag football game where he can barely run,”

followed by,

“Jon Jones retired because of his hips. He’s got arthritis in his hips. Apparently, he’s been — doctors say he should have hip replacements. That, on top of all the other reasons that I wouldn’t, but the Jon Jones thing is bulls–t.”

White’s comments underscored his skepticism regarding Jones’s health and dependability for such a significant event.

Jones Responds to UFC’s Offer and Public Statements

In response, Jones pushed back against White’s claims by sharing details about what he described as sincere negotiations for a headline spot on the White House card. He dismissed suggestions that he was unwilling to fight, stating that his team was indeed engaged in discussions, but felt the UFC’s offer was inadequate. He explained,

“Dana, you were heated about why I’m not on the White House card, but let’s clear something up. My team and I were actually negotiating with the UFC for that fight. Real negotiations,”

and added,

“I even came down from my original number, and what was I offered in return ? I was lowballed.”

Jones has previously declined a $30 million proposal to face Tom Aspinall, demonstrating his high value within the UFC. His rumored matchup against Alex Pereira was ultimately replaced by a heavyweight interim title fight between Pereira and Ciryl Gane on the card.

Sharing his disappointment with the public narrative, Jones said,

“I understand business deals fall through sometimes, but going out publicly and saying things that aren’t true isn’t right,”

and continued,

“After everything I’ve given to the UFC, the years, the title defenses, the fights, hearing that I’m ‘done’ is disappointing.”

Jones’s Health Treatments and Training Plans Highlight Dispute

Jones revealed he underwent stem cell therapy on his arthritic hip shortly before the White House event and was prepared to begin training camp on March 9 to compete. He questioned the justification White gave for excluding him, suggesting that if he had accepted the UFC’s lower offer, the narrative about his hip issues might have changed. Jones wrote,

“So let me get this straight, if I had accepted the lowball offer, suddenly my hip would be fine and I’d be on the White House card? That doesn’t make sense.”

Legacy and Upcoming White House Fight Card Details

Jones is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts history, holding a record of 28 wins, 1 loss, and 1 no-contest, with his only loss occurring by disqualification. His last UFC appearance was a knockout victory over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November 2024. Following prolonged contract disagreements, Jones retired from active competition late last year.

The UFC Freedom 250 White House card will now be headlined by Illia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, competing for the lightweight championship.
