Daniel Cormier Feels Bad for Jon Jones After UFC Fallout

Daniel Cormier, long-time rival of Jon Jones, voiced concern for the former UFC heavyweight champion after Jones openly demanded his release from the promotion. The dispute escalated following UFC CEO Dana White’s comments during the UFC 326 post-fight press conference, where he dismissed Jones’ claim that negotiations were underway for him to appear on the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 card at the White House. This public dismissal led Jones to call for his release via social media, fueling tensions in a saga that has captured attention due to Jones’ legendary but tumultuous tenure in the UFC.

Understanding the Discord Between Jon Jones and UFC Leadership

Jon Jones, widely regarded as among the greatest fighters in UFC history despite controversies, could become a free agent later this year if the promotion grants his request. However, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, who faced Jones twice in heated bouts, expressed confusion over the intensity of Jones’ reaction to White’s remarks. In a recent episode of Funky and the Champ, Cormier unpacked the ongoing friction between Jones and the UFC executives, emphasizing a long history of strained interactions on both sides.

“Here’s where I’m lost: Jon Jones has had a lot of interactions with the UFC, positive and negative, right? So why would he be so hurt by it if there’s something he knows isn’t being given to the public? There have been many occasions when [Jon and Dana] have talked negative about each other, and haven’t been able to come to terms. Sometimes on Jon’s doing, sometimes on the UFC’s doing. So why would he be so hurt now?”

Cormier said of Jones.

Cormier pointed out that Jones seemed particularly affected because Dana White publicly challenged his truthfulness about the White House event.

“Because it was made to seem he would never be on the White House card…it seemed like his feelings were hurt because [Dana] was calling him a liar. It’s hard to get that upset when someone’s actually shown you that behavior before, but right now, it just seems like it really bothered him, and I’ve called him everything! [LAUGHS].”

The Importance of the White House Fight Card and Jones’ Future in UFC

Daniel Cormier further suggested that the White House event held special significance for Jones beyond typical fight negotiations.

“I think it was honestly because the White House thing meant something to him,”

Cormier explained.

He also expressed strong conviction that Jones would not be released from UFC contracts anytime soon, given the organization’s need to maintain exclusive control over one of its marquee fighters, especially considering a potential matchup with Francis Ngannou.

“He’s not getting released. I think zero percent he gets released…there’s no way you can release Jones, because then if [Jones vs. Francis Ngannou] can be made outside of the UFC, that’s giving someone power. So there’s no way that he can fight anywhere else!”

Current Status and Potential Ramifications of the UFC-Jones Dispute

As of now, it remains unclear whether Dana White and the UFC leadership will honor Jon Jones’ request for release. Jones has not competed since his victory over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 and subsequently announced his retirement last summer after failed negotiations for a bout with Tom Aspinall. The ongoing conflict highlights the complex dynamics between fighters and UFC management, which can deeply affect contract disputes and fight scheduling.

This public disagreement may influence Jones’ standing within the UFC and alter future opportunities, including possible free agency later this year, something rare in Jones’ career. The situation remains a focal point of discussion among fight fans and industry insiders concerning fighter rights and promotion authority.
