Big Rapids Unveils New Pickleball Court Rules: In a move that highlights the community’s dedication to the sport, the Big Rapids city commission approved a resolution on July 1 establishing rules for the newly completed pickleball courts. These courts, a source of pride for the local pickleball association, now have a clear set of guidelines to ensure they remain a welcoming and enjoyable space for all players.
City manager Mark Gifford emphasized the community’s vibrant pickleball association and their pride in the newly established courts. He noted that users had approached the city to propose implementing basic rules for court usage, which he recommended during the meeting.
We have a very active pickleball association in the community, and it takes a lot of pride in our new courts, Users of the courts have come to us to request posting some basic rules for use of the courts. We are recommending those to you this evening.”

The city’s Parks and Recreation department, in collaboration with the pickleball association, crafted these rules during a meeting on June 13. After thorough discussion and input from association members, the department proposed these guidelines to the city commission for approval and adoption.

- No food or glass on court surfaces.
- No bicycles or skateboards on court surfaces.
- No chairs on court surfaces.
- Please be respectful of others on the courts regarding profanity, loud music, etc.
- If the courts are full, please finish your game and wait for the next court. Follow the “4 on 4 off” rule when courts are at full occupancy.
