The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Alex Cappa in the third round with the 94th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Tampa Bay traded its fourth and sixth round picks to the Minnesota Vikings to move up and select him. He became the 12th offensive tackle drafted that year and the highest draft selection in Humboldt State history, as well as the program’s first NFL draft pick since Freeman Baysinger in 1992.

On May 13, 2018, Cappa signed a four-year, $3.36 million rookie contract with the Buccaneers. As a rookie, he appeared in six games at the end of the regular season. He made his first career start in the 2019 regular season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. On October 6, 2019, he suffered a broken left arm against the New Orleans Saints but did not miss a snap after sustaining the injury.
