Solomon Alijah Lewis Vera-Tucker is an American professional football guard for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans, where he earned the Morris Trophy in 2020 and was recognized as a two-time All-Pac-12 selection. Vera-Tucker was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of his professional career.

Early Life and Background

Alijah Vera-Tucker was born on June 17, 1999, in Oakland, California. He attended Bishop O’Dowd High School, where he excelled in football, playing both offensive tackle and defensive end. During his senior year, he was named an Under Armour All-American, showcasing his talent on a national level. Vera-Tucker was rated as a four-star recruit and chose to play college football at USC, turning down offers from several other prestigious programs including Washington, Oregon, and UCLA.

Path to American Football

After redshirting his true freshman season at USC, Vera-Tucker made an immediate impact by participating in all 12 games during his redshirt freshman year, primarily as a reserve guard and on special teams. His performance earned him recognition, and he was named first-team All-Pac-12 Conference by the Associated Press. Although he considered entering the 2020 NFL Draft, he ultimately decided to return to USC for another season. However, after the Pac-12 postponed the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he opted out to prepare for the draft but later reversed this decision when the conference announced a return to play.

Early Career (2021)

Alijah Vera-Tucker was selected by the New York Jets in the first round as the 14th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year rookie contract with the Jets on July 20, 2021, valued at $15.88 million. Vera-Tucker quickly established himself as a key player, starting 16 games in his rookie season and earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Breakthrough (2022-2023)

In 2022, Vera-Tucker was named the starting right guard for the Jets after the team acquired left guard Laken Tomlinson. His versatility was tested when he played left tackle in Week 4 due to an injury to George Fant, and later moved to right tackle in Week 5 after Max Mitchell was injured. Unfortunately, Vera-Tucker suffered a torn triceps in Week 7, which led to him being placed on injured reserve on October 25, 2022.
