Cameron Bouchea Thomas is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the best shooting guards in the 2020 class. He is the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 or more points in three consecutive games. Thomas played college basketball for the Louisiana State University Tigers before entering the NBA.

Early Life and Background

Cameron Bouchea Thomas was born on October 13, 2001, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, while his mother was living there. At the age of seven, he showcased his talent by winning a contest for making 33 consecutive free throws. Thomas began his basketball journey at Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, as a freshman. However, he did not play during his sophomore season due to a lack of alignment with the coaching staff. For his junior year, he transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, where he joined a highly regarded team that included notable players like Cole Anthony and Kofi Cockburn. During his time at Oak Hill, Thomas averaged 26.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leading his team to a remarkable 31–5 record.

Path to Basketball

In July 2019, Thomas earned the title of Offensive Player of the Year at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, where he averaged a league-leading 29.5 points per game while playing for Boo Williams. As a senior at Oak Hill, he elevated his game further, averaging 31.5 points, six rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. He had nine games with over 30 points, including two games where he scored over 40 points. His outstanding performance led his team to win the Tournament of Champions title, and he was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Cameron Thomas declared for the 2021 NBA draft after a standout freshman season at Louisiana State University. He led all freshmen in scoring with an average of 23 points per game, along with 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the First Team All-SEC and the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2021.

Breakthrough (2021-Present)

Thomas was selected with the 27th pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the Brooklyn Nets. He made his NBA debut on October 19, 2021, scoring two points in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. During the 2021 NBA Summer League, he was named the Summer League MVP, leading the league in scoring with an average of 27 points per game.
