Cam York Bio
Cameron York is an American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born in Anaheim Hills, California, he was drafted 14th overall by the Flyers in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Before turning professional, York developed his game at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, the U.S. National Team Development Program, and the University of Michigan.
Early Life and Background
Cameron York was born on January 5, 2001, in Anaheim Hills, California. Growing up in Anaheim, he played youth hockey alongside Jackson Niedermayer, the son of Scott Niedermayer, who coached his youth team. His father, Jeff, installed a roller skating rink surface in the backyard, where York skated every day after school. It was through that daily roller skating that York developed an early love for hockey.
York played squirt and peewee hockey within the Anaheim Jr. Ducks minor program, which was coached by Craig Johnson and Scott Niedermayer. As a child, his favorite team was the hometown Anaheim Ducks, and he frequently attended their games. He has cited the Ducks’ 2007 Stanley Cup victory as a key inspiration for pursuing his own hockey career.
Path to Hockey
Once he turned 14, York enrolled at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, a Minnesota prep school known for producing elite hockey talent. During his two seasons there, he totaled more than 100 points, establishing himself as one of the top young defensemen in the country. After Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, York was invited to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL).

College Career (2019–2021)
York was originally committed to play for the Boston College Eagles, but rescinded that commitment when head coach Greg Brown left to join the New York Rangers. He eventually committed to the Michigan Wolverines, where he enrolled for the 2019–20 season. He recorded his first collegiate goal in a 2–1 loss to Ohio State on November 2, 2019.
During the 2020–21 season, York led the Big Ten in defenseman scoring with 20 points on four goals and 16 assists. Five of his 20 points came on the power play, while four of his assists set up game-winning goals.
