During his freshman season in 2018, Roa pitched in 14 games, achieving a 4.30 earned run average with 12 strikeouts over 14 and two-thirds innings. His summer was spent playing in the Northwoods League for the La Crosse Loggers.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Christian Roa in the second round with the 48th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft. He signed with the Reds for a reported $1.5 million. During his time with both teams, Roa made 15 appearances, including 13 starts, and recorded a 4–3 record with a 3.53 earned run average and 67 strikeouts over 58 and two-thirds innings.
Roa opened the 2022 season on the injured list but was activated in early May and reassigned to Dayton. Later that year, he was promoted to the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Double-A Southern League. Across twenty starts between both teams, Roa finished with a 6–3 record, a 3.56 earned run average, and 102 strikeouts over ninety innings.
