Early Life and Background

Delon Reginald Wright was born on April 26, 1992, in Los Angeles, California. He attended Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, California, where he led his team to the California state championship as a senior and was named the CIF Southern Section Division 1A Player of the Year. Despite his athletic success, Wright struggled academically and did not graduate, which led him to enroll at the City College of San Francisco. This allowed him to play basketball without having completed high school. After two successful seasons at the junior college level, he committed to the University of Utah, where he majored in sociology.

Path to Basketball

At the University of Utah, Delon Wright quickly established himself as one of the top players in the Pac-12 Conference. In his first season, he finished among the top ten in several statistical categories, including scoring, assists, steals, and field goal percentage. He became the first player in Utah men’s basketball history to be named to the first-team All-Pac-12 in consecutive years (2014 and 2015). After a standout college career, he decided to enter the 2015 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Toronto Raptors.

Early Career (2015–2019)

Delon Wright was selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. He signed his rookie scale contract on July 3, 2015, and joined the team for the 2015 NBA Summer League. During his rookie season, he had multiple assignments with the Raptors 905 of the NBA Development League. Wright had a notable performance on April 8, 2016, scoring a season-high 19 points in a win over the Indiana Pacers. However, he missed much of the 2016–2017 season due to a shoulder injury. In the 2017–2018 season, he set career highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds in a game against the Chicago Bulls.

Breakthrough (2019–2021)

In February 2019, Delon Wright was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a deal involving Marc Gasol. He had a breakout performance with the Grizzlies, scoring a career-high 26 points and recording his first triple-double. He averaged 12.2 points per game during his time with Memphis. Later, he was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal.
