Dennis Gardeck was born on August 9, 1994, in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. He attended Crystal Lake South High School, where he excelled as an all-conference linebacker and also played lacrosse. Gardeck committed to play college football at Division II West Virginia State University. Due to an injury sustained in lacrosse during his senior year, he chose to redshirt as a true freshman in 2013. During his time at West Virginia State, Gardeck became a highly productive linebacker, earning Honorable Mention All-Mountain East honors in 2014, First-Team All-Mountain East in 2015, and Second-Team All-Mountain East in 2016. He finished his college career with impressive statistics, including 273 tackles and 18 sacks. After his head coach, Jon Anderson, was hired at the University of Sioux Falls, Gardeck transferred to complete his final season of eligibility.
