Hall was born on March 19, 2001, in Gulfport, Mississippi, and he overcame significant health challenges early in his life. Emerging as a talented player during his high school career at Gulfport, he was a four-star recruit before committing to Auburn University, where he achieved notable success. Derick Hall was born four months premature and was initially declared dead at birth before being resuscitated. Weighing just 2 pounds and 1 ounce at birth, he spent a week on life support. Doctors advised his mother, Stacy Gooden-Crandle, to discontinue life support, but she refused. Hall spent five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on a ventilator before finally going home with his family. In his early years, he was frequently hospitalized and suffered from asthma. Hall began playing flag football at the age of four and transitioned to tackle football when he was nine. He attended Gulfport High School, where he played both offense and defense.
Coming out of high school, Hall was recognized as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, ranking as the 147th overall recruit and the 8th ranked weakside defensive end. He committed to play college football at Auburn University over other offers from Mississippi State and Ole Miss, citing his relationship with Auburn assistant coach Rodney Garner as a significant factor in his decision.

Hall was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the 37th pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, a pick that the Seahawks acquired in the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos during the 2022 offseason.
