Erik Robert Johnson is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 17 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres, and the Philadelphia Flyers. Nicknamed the ‘Condor’, Johnson was selected with the first overall pick by the Blues in the 2006 NHL entry draft. Johnson won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022. Additionally, he has represented the United States in numerous tournaments.
Early Life and Background
Erik Robert Johnson was born on March 21, 1988, in Bloomington, Minnesota. Growing up in a sports-oriented environment, he was introduced to hockey at a young age. Johnson played hockey for the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, Minnesota, where he excelled during his freshman and sophomore years. In the 2003–04 season, he led all defensemen in scoring with 13 goals and 34 points, earning a spot on the Missota All-Conference Team. At the age of 16, he transferred to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to play for the National Team Development Program (NTDP), further honing his skills and preparing for a professional career.
Path to Hockey
Johnson’s rise in hockey continued as he split time between the U.S. National under-17 and under-18 squads during the 2004–05 season, where he compiled 26 points in 57 games. His hybrid two-way style and physicality made him a standout player, leading to a team-leading 49 points in 47 games with the under-18 team the following season. His impressive performance caught the attention of NHL scouts, and he was selected first overall in the 2006 NHL entry draft by the St. Louis Blues. This achievement made him the first American-born defenseman to be drafted first overall without having played Canadian major junior or collegiate hockey.

Early Career (2007–2011)
Johnson began his NHL career with the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 season. His first notable work came when he scored his first career NHL goal on October 6, 2007, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. Despite suffering a slight bone fracture in his foot early in his career, he quickly established himself as a key player for the Blues. By January 2008, he had tallied 16 points, tying for 10th among all NHL rookies. Johnson’s rookie season ended with him averaging over 18 minutes of ice time per game, finishing with 5 goals and 28 assists in 69 games.
Breakthrough (2011–2025)
In February 2011, Johnson was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he would spend the next 13 seasons. His debut with the Avalanche was marked by a goal against his former team, the St. Louis Blues. Over the years, Johnson became known for his stability and offensive presence on the blue line. He reached several career milestones, including playing in his 300th NHL game in January 2013 and scoring his 50th career goal in October 2015. Johnson was also named an assistant captain for the Avalanche and was selected for the NHL All-Star Game during the 2014–15 season.
