Jack Campbell is an American professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently signed with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. Born on January 9, 1992, in Port Huron, Michigan, Campbell began his career in junior hockey before being drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. After making his NHL debut in 2013 and playing for several teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he was named an NHL All-Star in 2022, Campbell has established himself as a well-respected goaltender in professional hockey.
Early Life and Background
Campbell was born on January 9, 1992, in Port Huron, Michigan, to parents Jack Sr. and Debbie. He was inspired by his older cousin Marshall to become a goaltender. Although his father, uncle, and coaches tried to convince Campbell to play other positions, he remained committed to the goaltending position from an early age. This early dedication to the craft would shape his future career trajectory in hockey.
As a youth player, Campbell competed in the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Little Caesars minor ice hockey team. The team lost their first game but rallied to win the tournament, defeating Detroit Compuware in the finals. Campbell later graduated to the Detroit Honeybaked midget team before being selected in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
Path to Professional Hockey
Campbell joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in 2008. During his two seasons with the NTDP, he set a new franchise record for lowest goals-against average and most shutouts in a career. Dallas Stars (2012–2016)
Following the conclusion of the 2011–12 season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, the Dallas Stars assigned Campbell to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Texas Stars. On March 23, 2013, he made his professional debut against the Oklahoma City Barons. Two nights later, he won his first professional game against the Toronto Marlies, making 32 saves in a 4–2 victory. On March 30, 2013, Campbell recorded his first professional shutout, stopping 30 shots in a 4–0 win over the Lake Erie Monsters.
After attending the Stars training camp, Campbell was assigned to the AHL to begin the 2013–14 season. On October 20, 2013, he was recalled and made his NHL debut with Dallas, posting a 6–3 loss against the Anaheim Ducks. He helped lead the Texas Stars to the 2014 Calder Cup championship that season. Campbell continued with the Stars organization through the 2015–16 season, though he experienced challenges including being reassigned to the ECHL affiliate Idaho Steelheads for a period.
Los Angeles Kings (2016–2020)
Unable to progress within the Stars organization, Campbell was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on June 25, 2016, for defenseman Nick Ebert. He signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Kings and later signed a two-year extension on November 22, 2017. On February 27, 2018, Campbell made 41 saves and earned his first NHL win in a 4–1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights.
On October 11, 2018, Campbell recorded his first NHL shutout with 40 saves against the Montreal Canadiens. He developed a friendship with fellow goaltender Jonathan Quick during his time in Los Angeles. However, his season was cut short by a knee injury on November 10, 2018. Campbell recovered and was recalled from the Ontario Reign, eventually signing a two-year, $3.3 million contract extension on September 7, 2019.
Toronto Maple Leafs (2020–2022)
On February 5, 2020, the Kings traded Campbell to the Toronto Maple Leafs alongside Kyle Clifford for Trevor Moore and draft picks. He made his Maple Leafs debut on February 7, resulting in a 5–4 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks. Campbell quickly emerged as the team’s starting netminder, overtaking Frederik Andersen through strong play.
On April 7, 2021, Campbell set a Maple Leafs record for consecutive wins by a goaltender with 10. He tied the league record with Carey Price for consecutive wins to start a season before setting a new record of 11 on April 10, 2021. Campbell continued his strong play into the following season, earning his first NHL All-Star Game selection on January 13, 2022. Edmonton Oilers (2022–2024)
With Campbell’s contract concluding in Toronto, he signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 13, 2022. 2025 Season Performance
Campbell entered the 2024–25 season with the Detroit Red Wings organization following his signing in July 2024. After a period away from the team while in the Player Assistance Program, he returned and was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s AHL affiliate, to continue his career. Campbell dressed for the Red Wings once during the season, called up on emergency basis to back up Ville Husso. He appeared in 14 regular season games with the Griffins during the season.
