He concluded his high school career with impressive statistics, totaling 57 goals and 63 assists for a combined 120 points, which remains the highest in the school’s history. His performance earned him the Herb Brooks Award, which is given to the player who best exemplifies the values and traits of the legendary coach.

Path to Hockey

After high school, Jackson Cates played junior ice hockey with the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League (USHL). His time with the Black Hawks was marked by notable performances, including a hat trick against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on January 28, 2018. Cates initially committed to play hockey at Michigan Tech but later opted to sign a National Letter of Intent with the University of Minnesota Duluth in August 2017, allowing him to play alongside his younger brother, Noah Cates. In his junior season with the Bulldogs, he posted 27 points, consisting of 11 goals and 16 assists in just 28 games.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he had to quarantine upon arriving in Philadelphia, which delayed his ability to skate with the team. Cates made his NHL debut on April 23, 2021, in a game against the New York Rangers, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
