Unfortunately, he did not play in any games in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the pandemic. He began the 2021 season with the High-A Beloit Snappers, where he made a significant impact, posting a 3–2 record with a 5.28 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 59+2⁄3 innings pitched. His performance earned him a promotion to the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos, where he continued to develop his skills.
Breakthrough (2023)
On November 29, 2021, Kyle Nicolas was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with Zach Thompson and Connor Scott in exchange for Jacob Stallings. He spent the 2022 season with the Double-A Altoona Curve, making 24 appearances and posting a 3.97 ERA with 101 strikeouts across 90+2⁄3 innings pitched. In 2023, Nicolas made 35 appearances split between Double-A Altoona and the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, registering a cumulative 4–7 record and a 5.20 ERA with 127 strikeouts and 2 saves in 98+2⁄3 innings pitched. On September 19, 2023, he had his contract selected to the 40-man roster and was promoted to the major leagues for the first time.
