Steven Chandler Okert is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the San Francisco Giants, Miami Marlins, and Minnesota Twins. The Giants selected Okert in the fourth round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft.
Early Life and Background
Steven Chandler Okert was born on July 9, 1991, in Riverside, California. He graduated from Rowlett High School in Rowlett, Texas. Okert’s early exposure to baseball laid the foundation for his future career in the sport.
Path to Baseball
Okert was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 43rd round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft out of Grayson County College, but he did not sign and returned to Grayson. He was drafted again by the Brewers in the 33rd round of the 2011 draft but chose to transfer to the University of Oklahoma instead. During his lone season with the Oklahoma Sooners, he appeared in 30 games, achieving a record of 9–8 with a 3.07 earned run average and 78 strikeouts.

Okert made his professional debut in 2012 after being drafted by the San Francisco Giants. He played for the Arizona League Giants and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, posting a 2.20 earned run average in 28+2⁄3 innings. In 2013, he recorded a 2.97 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 60+2⁄3 innings while playing for the Augusta GreenJackets. After a successful 2014 season with the San Jose Giants, where he had a 1.53 ERA and 19 saves, he was promoted to the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Giants added him to their 40-man roster after the 2015 season. Okert was called up to the San Francisco Giants on April 19, 2016, and made his major league debut later that day against the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching two scoreless innings. In 2017, he recorded his first major league win and made 44 relief appearances. In 2018, he logged a 1.23 ERA in ten appearances. However, he was designated for assignment by the Giants in March 2019 and spent the year in Triple-A with the Sacramento River Cats.
Breakthrough (2021–2023)
On February 26, 2021, Okert signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins. He began the year with the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, where he had a 1.80 ERA in 15 appearances. He was called up to the Marlins’ active roster on June 29, 2021, and made 34 relief appearances, achieving a 2.75 ERA. In 2022, he made 60 appearances out of the bullpen, recording a 5–5 record and a 2.98 ERA. In 2023, Okert made 64 appearances for Miami, posting a 4.45 ERA.
