Early Life and Background
Tyler Austin Wells was born on August 26, 1994. He attended University High School in Morgantown, West Virginia, as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to Yucaipa High School in Yucaipa, California. As a junior in 2012, he achieved an impressive record of 8–0 with a 0.84 earned run average (ERA). In his senior year of 2013, he further excelled with a remarkable 0.28 ERA. After graduating high school, Wells enrolled at California State University, San Bernardino, where he played college baseball for the Coyotes. During his freshman year in 2014, Wells appeared in 11 games, starting eight, and finished with a record of 1–5 and a 4.30 ERA. In his sophomore year, he had a record of 2–4 with a 4.93 ERA in 12 starts. Wells broke out as a junior in 2016, pitching to a 4–7 record with a 2.84 ERA in 15 starts.
Path to Baseball
After his successful college career, Wells was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He made his professional debut with the Elizabethton Twins, where he had a record of 5–2 with a 3.23 ERA in ten starts. In 2017, he played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, finishing with a record of 5–3 and a 3.11 ERA in 14 starts. Wells began 2018 with the Fort Myers Miracle, where he was named a Florida State League All-Star before being promoted to the Chattanooga Lookouts in July. That season, he combined for a record of 10–6 with a 2.49 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP across both teams. Unfortunately, Wells faced a setback in 2019 when he underwent Tommy John surgery in May, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season. The following year, he did not play any minor league games due to the cancellation of the minor league season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early Career (2021)
Tyler Wells made his MLB debut on April 4, 2021, in relief against the Boston Red Sox, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He quickly made an impact, earning his first career major league victory on June 2, 2021, by pitching three scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins. Later that season, on September 5, 2021, he recorded his first career save after pitching a perfect ninth inning in an 8-7 win over the New York Yankees. Despite facing injuries during the season, Wells managed to pitch 57 innings in relief, finishing with a record of 2–3 and a 4.11 ERA, along with 65 strikeouts.
Breakthrough (2022)
In 2022, Wells began the season in the Baltimore Orioles’ starting rotation, where he made 23 starts and pitched to a 4.25 ERA in over 103 innings. He was recognized as the Orioles’ best starting pitcher in the first half of the season, achieving a 3.18 ERA and striking out 103 batters. However, after surpassing his career-high in innings pitched before the All-Star break, Wells struggled in the second half, leading to a brief demotion to Double-A Bowie Baysox and later to Triple-A Norfolk Tides. He returned to the Orioles and made three scoreless relief appearances, including earning his fifth career save in a crucial 2-0 win over the Boston Red Sox on September 28, 2022, which clinched the Orioles’ first American League East title since 2014.
