By his senior year, he was named the WCAC Player of the Year, along with first-team All-State and first-team All-Metro honors, averaging 18.4 points, four rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. Johnson was rated as the 39th-best point guard prospect in his class by ESPN and was a three-star recruit by 247Sports. Initially, he committed to playing college basketball for Nebraska but later requested a release from his National Letter of Intent, ultimately choosing to play for the University of Pittsburgh.
