Established in 2023, the team stands as one of six inaugural franchises in the league. The franchise is owned by an investor group that includes Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft, along with Soma Somasegar, Samir Bodas, Ashok Krishnamurthi, Sanjay Parthasarathy, the GMR Group, and the JSW Group. Their planned home ground is Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington, designed to accommodate 18,000 spectators. The team colors are black, white, light green, and orange. The Seattle Orcas maintain a minor league affiliate relationship with the Seattle Thunderbolts, who captured the Minor League Cricket championship in 2022.

The organization is led by chief executive officer Hemant Dua, with Bala Nagarajan serving as general manager. Former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre commands the coaching staff as head coach. The Orcas operate under the GMR Group partnership, which co-owns the Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League, providing technical and operational expertise drawn from international cricket operations.

Founding and Organizational Origins

The journey toward establishing professional cricket in the Seattle region began in November 2021 when the Bellevue City Council passed a resolution supporting research into cricket facility costs and feasibility on county-owned land at Marymoor Park. This initial step was followed by Redmond City Council adopting a similar resolution in January 2022. King County subsequently passed a motion in February 2022 to support developing a cricket facility at Marymoor Park, signaling governmental backing for professional cricket infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest.

In May 2022, Major League Cricket announced that prominent technology leaders including Somasegar and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were among the lead investors launching the professional T20 league in the United States. This high-profile investment brought credibility and resources to the nascent league. In March 2023, MLC officially unveiled the Seattle franchise ownership, team name, and logo ahead of the inaugural MLC domestic draft. Co-owner Soma Somasegar explained that the Orcas name and color scheme pay tribute to the local Seattle community that fostered a spirit of support for the new venture. The team subsequently partnered with the GMR Group, leveraging their experience from operating the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Entry Into Major League Cricket Competition

The Seattle Orcas entered Major League Cricket as one of six inaugural franchises when the league launched its inaugural season in 2023. The organization constructed its initial operations by participating in the league’s first domestic draft, where the Orcas secured the first overall pick and selected Thunderbolts captain Harmeet Singh. The draft continued with selections including Shehan Jayasuriya, Angelo Perera, and Shubham Ranjane. The franchise also assembled an international roster featuring overseas signings such as Shimron Hetmyer, Quinton de Kock, Dwaine Pretorius, Imad Wasim, Andrew Tye, Wayne Parnell, Dasun Shanaka, and Heinrich Klaasen.

Support staff appointments strengthened the organizational structure with Johan Botha joining as bowling coach, Ross Taylor as batting coach, Pravin Amre assuming head coaching duties, and Jarrod Harkness serving as team analyst. Prior to the inaugural season, the Orcas unveiled a revamped logo emphasizing their focus on cricket as a sport. The organization established its identity as a franchise combining local Pacific Northwest ties with international cricket expertise through its ownership group and player recruitment strategy.

Seattle Orcas Competitive Journey

The Seattle Orcas have competed across three seasons in Major League Cricket since their establishment in 2023. The franchise experienced immediate competitive success in its inaugural campaign, reaching the championship final before establishing itself as a developing program facing the challenges of roster construction and consistency across multiple seasons of professional T20 competition.

Inaugural Season and Development (2023)

The Orcas launched their inaugural campaign in 2023 with impressive early results. The team opened the season by recording a 5-wicket victory over the Washington Freedom, followed by a commanding 35-run win against the San Francisco Unicorns, and completed the opening stretch with an 8-wicket victory over the Texas Super Kings. This winning streak positioned the Orcas at the top of the league table. The streak concluded with a narrow 2-wicket defeat to the Los Angeles Knight Riders, but a subsequent 2-wicket victory over MI New York secured the Orcas a first-place finish heading into the playoff rounds.

In the playoff structure, Seattle delivered a dominant 9-wicket win over the Texas Super Kings in the qualifier match. The campaign concluded with a 7-wicket loss to MI New York in the 2023 MLC final, resulting in a runner-up finish for the franchise in its debut season. Despite the championship loss, the Orcas demonstrated competitive viability and established a foundation for future campaigns with their blend of domestic draft selections and international talent.

2024 Season and Regression

The 2024 season presented significant challenges for the Seattle Orcas organization. The campaign began with a 6-wicket defeat to MI New York in the season opener. A standout performance followed when Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten century powered the Orcas to a commanding 9-wicket victory over the Los Angeles Knight Riders. However, this win would represent the franchise’s only victory of the season.

Seattle proceeded to lose five consecutive matches including a 5-wicket defeat to Washington, a 23-run loss to San Francisco despite Shehan Jayasuriya’s half-century, a 4-wicket loss to Los Angeles set up by Unmukt Chand’s 62 runs, another 6-wicket defeat to Washington, and a final loss to Texas. Ottneil Baartman’s three-wicket spell and Calvin Savage’s unbeaten 45 runs characterized the season-ending defeat that confirmed the Orcas’ last-place finish with a 1-4 record. The difficult campaign prompted significant organizational reflection and roster restructuring.

2025 Season and Rebuilding

Following the 2024 campaign, the Orcas initiated a comprehensive squad transformation retaining only six players ahead of the 2025 draft. The franchise pursued an aggressive recruitment strategy targeting established international talent. Domestic additions included Jessy Singh, Steven Taylor, Rahul Jariwala, Sujit Nayak, and Shayan Jahangir. The overseas signings featured Caribbean all-rounder Kyle Mayers, Shimron Hetmyer, Afghani pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi, Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza, Afghani Gulbadin Naib, spin bowler Waqar Salamkheil, former Australian cricketer David Warner, and West Indies pacer Obed McCoy.

2026 Season and New Leadership

Ahead of the 2026 season, the Seattle Orcas executed substantial roster changes signaling renewed competitive ambitions. Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was signed and appointed team captain, bringing experience from multiple international T20 competitions. Additional overseas acquisitions strengthened the squad including Tim Seifert, Ottniel Baartman, Tim Robinson, Matthew Breetzke, Tanveer Sangha, and Lungi Ngidi. The season opened with a 7-wicket defeat to Texas before the team secured a 5-wicket victory over Washington in their second match, demonstrating improved competitive form under the new leadership structure.

Seattle Orcas Achievements and Results

Through three seasons of Major League Cricket competition, the Seattle Orcas have established themselves as an inaugural franchise demonstrating both competitive potential and the challenges of building a sustained winning program in a developing league. The organization’s achievements span finals appearances, playoff qualifications, and individual player performances that have contributed to the franchise’s identity.

Major League Cricket Achievements

The franchise’s most significant achievement remains the 2023 MLC runner-up finish in the inaugural season. The Orcas compiled a first-place regular-season record and demonstrated the capability to defeat all other franchises in the league during their opening campaign. Key performances included multiple five-wicket victories and dominant batting displays that established the Orcas as an immediate competitive force in American professional cricket.

Season-by-Season Results

The 2023 season concluded with a 4-1 regular-season record and a finals appearance. The 2024 season yielded a 1-4 record and last-place finish, representing the franchise’s most challenging competitive stretch. The 2025 and 2026 seasons continued with the organization rebuilding its roster and pursuing improved results through strategic player acquisitions and coaching continuity under Pravin Amre’s leadership.
