Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider expressed his response to the controversial killing of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, who was fatally shot by an ICE officer on Saturday in Minneapolis. Strider connected this incident to a historical moment by sharing an image referencing the 1770 Boston Massacre, where five protestors were killed by British soldiers.
Alongside this, the All-Star pitcher also posted statements from former US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama regarding the ICE shooting. Strider’s reaction highlights growing unease among athletes about this tragic event.
Other Athletes Voice Strong Opposition to ICE Practices
Several athletes publicly responded to Pretti’s death over the weekend. Minnesota Twins pitcher Bailey Ober showed solidarity by posting a protest image against ICE on his Instagram story. WNBA star Breanna Stewart carried an Abolish ICE sign during an event in Miami, emphasizing a message of community and care.
“I was just disgusted from everything that you see on Instagram and in the news,” Stewart said. “We’re so fueled by hate right now instead of love, so I wanted to have a simple message of ‘Abolish ICE,’ which means having policies to uplift families and communities instead of fueling fear and violence.”
Another WNBA player, Angel Reese, posted a heartfelt message on X saying, “Praying for our country🥺🙏🏽” NBA All-Star Tyerese Haliburton also shared a direct statement on X: “Alex Pretti was murdered.”
Atlanta Braves’ Rotation and Contract Considerations
Alongside the reactions to social issues, the Braves are managing their pitching lineup led by Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, and Reynaldo Lopez. However, few pitchers currently have long-term contracts secured. Baseball writer Chase Owens noted:
“Beyond Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach, there are no clear locks for the Atlanta Braves rotation beyond 2026.”
The Braves recently explored a possible trade involving pitcher Freddy Peralta before his move to the New York Mets last week, reflecting efforts to strengthen their rotation.
Significance of Athlete Activism and Team Dynamics
The public outcry from Spencer Strider and other athletes reflects a rising frustration with issues surrounding ICE and systemic violence. By referencing the Boston Massacre, Strider underscored historical patterns of injustice, pushing for awareness and change.
Meanwhile, the Braves’ ongoing roster evaluations reveal the challenges teams face balancing competitive success and long-term planning. Strider remains a key figure both on the field and as a voice among athletes responding to distressing societal events.
