Billionaire Eyes St Louis Cardinals After Penguins Deal

David Hoffmann, a billionaire from Washington, Missouri, who recently moved to acquire a controlling interest in the Pittsburgh Penguins, revealed his plans to broaden his presence in professional sports by targeting the St Louis Cardinals. Hoffmann made the announcement on Thursday during an event at the St. Louis County Library’s Clark Family Branch.

Current Move Toward Penguins Ownership and Future Ambitions

Hoffmann and his sons are in the process of purchasing the Penguins, with formal approval still required from the NHL’s Board of Governors. This acquisition marks a significant step in his goal to build a portfolio of professional teams based in St. Louis, where he has local roots. Speaking at the Advance STL event, Hoffmann stated,

“What we plan to do is buy (the Penguins franchise), pay it off and buy a baseball team. We’d like that to be the Cardinals.”

Dialogue With Cardinals Owners Has Not Yet Occurred

Despite his clear interest in the Cardinals, Hoffmann admitted in a post-event interview that he has not yet engaged in conversations with the Dewitt family, the current Cardinals owners, regarding a possible sale. When asked about the availability of the franchise, Hoffmann noted, “Everybody tells us no.”

Significance of Potential St Louis Cardinals Acquisition

Hoffmann’s bid to enter the Cardinals’ ownership circles reflects a wider ambition to influence major sports franchises rooted in his hometown region. If successful, this move could signal a shift in the team’s future direction. It also highlights Hoffmann’s long-term commitment to St. Louis sports, following his previous attempt to buy the St. Louis Blues in 2012.
