This season, Major League Baseball (MLB) will produce and distribute local television broadcasts for at least 14 teams, including the Detroit Tigers. The shift follows significant instability within the regional sports network (RSN) sector, with MLB stepping in to ensure fans maintain access to live games in key markets.
The Tigers’ new broadcast arrangement, announced recently, is notable for its collaboration with Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, which owns both the Tigers and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. While Ilitch Sports + Entertainment continues to handle the broadcast production for Red Wings hockey, MLB will assist in the production and distribution of the Tigers’ baseball games starting this season.
Transition From Regional Sports Networks to MLB-Controlled Broadcasts
Multiple MLB teams, including the Tigers, have ended their contracts with Main Street Sports Group, the operator of a network of regional sports channels, due to missed rights payments. Nine clubs terminated their agreements last month amid growing financial concerns surrounding Main Street’s 15 owned and operated RSNs. Without a new majority owner or fresh investments, these networks face potential insolvency.
In response to these developments, MLB has taken direct control over the local broadcasts of several teams beyond Detroit, adding the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, and Washington Nationals this offseason. The Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels have yet to finalize their local coverage plans.

Ensuring Reliable Access and Enhanced Viewing Experience for Fans
MLB officials emphasize that the transition aims to deliver consistent and comprehensive viewing opportunities for local fans by expanding market reach. Through a combination of local cable systems, satellite, and direct-to-consumer streaming, MLB seeks to provide dependable access across different platforms.
Ryan Gustafson, president and CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, highlighted the importance of stability and quality for fans during these uncertain times for regional sports broadcasting:
“Given recent uncertainty throughout the regional sports broadcasting industry, we recognize the importance of providing fans with a consistent, year-round outlet to watch Tigers baseball and Red Wings hockey,”
Ryan Gustafson, president and CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment
“We have two of the top-rated broadcasts in our respective sports and remain focused on listening to fans about what matters most to them. What we’ve heard includes making sure our games are available throughout the market, providing a reliable streaming product, and producing a broadcast that’s informative and entertaining in all the right ways. This is a great path forward in those areas, allowing us to provide a great experience for fans throughout our local market.”

What This Means for the Future of Local Sports Broadcasting
The move by MLB to assume control over local broadcasts signals a shift in how sports content is delivered amid the struggles of RSNs like Main Street Sports Group. Fans can expect more stable access to games via enhanced digital platforms and traditional outlets under MLB’s direction. As the industry navigates these changes, MLB’s involvement may set a precedent for other leagues facing similar challenges in regional sports media distribution.
With ongoing negotiations and evolving broadcast landscapes, the immediate future will likely involve further adjustments in local sports coverage plans. The decisions by the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels regarding their local broadcast strategies will be closely watched as the season progresses.
