Brad Keselowski has confirmed he will compete in the entire Cup Series event at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) this Sunday, ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding his status following an offseason leg injury. The former Cup champion reassured fans and his team that he feels ready to race despite the demanding nature of the Austin road course.
Keselowski addressed questions about his ability to withstand the race by sharing a positive message and visual update on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), indicating he will not hand off driving duties to substitute Joey Hand as had been previously considered.
Backup Driver Plans Set Aside as Keselowski Pushes Forward
Joey Hand, known as a road course specialist and experienced Cup driver, was prepared to serve as a reserve driver, potentially taking over if Keselowski’s injury prevented him from completing the race. This option included Keselowski starting the race and then transferring control mid-event. However, those contingency plans appear unnecessary as Keselowski is now expected to drive the full race in Austin.
Last weekend, Keselowski told FOX NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass that his status would depend on upcoming medical and physical tests, explaining,
“I’ve got some more tests next week to get through, with medical tests and physical tests, and we’ll probably just see how those go and make a decision on what’s best for the team.”
This suggests that he and his team have been carefully evaluating his readiness to compete at full strength.

Recuperation Progress Following Daytona 500 Incident
Keselowski’s resilience was evident at the Daytona 500, where he battled aggressively for the win late in the race despite still recovering from his leg injury. He was involved in a crash triggered by another competitor during a critical moment but managed to finish fifth. This strong performance despite the recent injury highlighted his determination and capability to race at a high level.
Prior to that, there was some tension with competitor Riley Herbst over a racing move at the finish line, which Keselowski described as
“one of the dumbest things I have ever seen,”
underscoring the intense competition within the Cup Series. Herbst later defended his decision, citing high emotions during the moment.
Focus Shifts to Upcoming Road Course Challenge at Austin
The attention now turns to the challenges of COTA, a track known for rewarding driver skill and precision on road courses—an arena where Keselowski has shown mixed results in the past. Despite this, his current health status and mental focus place him in a good position to compete strongly.
RFK Racing’s priority is to be prepared for any scenario on race day, but with Keselowski’s confirmed status, their approach can center on maximizing race strategy and vehicle performance. Keselowski’s willingness to push through recovery and handle the demanding conditions at COTA shows his commitment to maintaining competitiveness throughout the season.
Potential Impact of Keselowski’s Participation at COTA
While road courses may not be Keselowski’s strongest suit, his experience and determination could lead to surprising results at Austin. The Cup Series teams and fans will be watching closely to see how well he adapts and performs on this challenging circuit. Success here could set a positive tone for the remainder of the season, especially as Keselowski continues to recover and refine his form following injury.
