Brad Keselowski to Start COTA NASCAR Race Despite Injury

Brad Keselowski is set to start Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) while still recovering from a broken right leg. Despite the injury sustained in December, Keselowski remains determined to compete at the 2.4-mile road course, showcasing his resilience and commitment to the sport.

Performance in Early Season Races Demonstrates Determination

After breaking his femur, Keselowski completed the first two races of the season at Daytona International Speedway and EchoPark Speedway, both of which are drafting-style ovals. However, the upcoming COTA race represents a new challenge due to the physical demands of a road course, prompting heightened preparation and caution.

Backup Plan In Place with Experienced Road Racer Joey Hand

To support Keselowski during the physically demanding COTA race, RFK Racing has standby driver Joey Hand ready to take over if necessary. Hand brings valuable road-course experience, having made eight NASCAR Cup Series starts, including a 2022 appearance at COTA’s full circuit. His best recent performance with RFK Racing was on the Chicago Street Course in 2024, where he led seven laps and finished fourth under wet conditions. Hand’s impressive credentials include major victories such as the 2011 Rolex 24 at Daytona, the 2012 12 Hours of Sebring, and a class win at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Keselowski Praises Hand’s Expertise and Support

Keselowski expressed confidence in Hand’s skills and assistance ahead of the EchoPark Speedway race:

He’s the Ford reserve driver for all the road courses. He’s won all the big races that you can win across the globe. A great guy, too, and he’s been very helpful.

Medical Clearance and Current Standings Highlight Readiness

Keselowski underwent a series of simulator sessions, go-karting practice, X-rays, and medical evaluations during the week to verify his ability to endure the physical stress of racing at COTA. Currently ninth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, Keselowski trails series leader Tyler Reddick by 64 points but remains hopeful about improving his position as the season progresses.

The Significance of Keselowski’s Commitment at COTA

Keselowski’s determination to compete at COTA despite his injury underscores his competitive spirit and dedication to RFK Racing. With Joey Hand prepared as a capable relief driver, the team shows strategic planning for endurance and adaptability. The outcome of this race may influence Keselowski’s momentum in the season as he strives to close the gap in the standings, providing fans an inspiring example of perseverance in motorsports.
