Shane van Gisbergen Finally Dominates COTA with Big Win

Shane van Gisbergen secured his first victory of the season at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) by winning Saturday’s Focused Health 250 race. The New Zealand driver took control early and maintained his lead to claim a decisive win, showcasing why the Shane van Gisbergen COTA win is so highly anticipated.

Starting from the front row alongside polesitter Connor Zilisch, van Gisbergen, driving the No. 9 Chevy for JR Motorsports, quickly moved ahead by Turn 2 after a daring three-wide pass. Although Zilisch and van Gisbergen exchanged positions during the race, mechanical difficulties with Zilisch’s brakes and handling, coupled with a late-race mishap involving Corey Day, pushed Zilisch out of contention. Van Gisbergen then surged back to the lead following the final restart.

Ross Chastain, van Gisbergen’s teammate at Trackhouse Racing, began the race in 13th position but managed to overtake multiple competitors after several cars overshot Turn 1. From there, van Gisbergen maintained a steady pace and crossed the finish line 0.780 seconds ahead of Austin Hill. The victory marked van Gisbergen’s fifth win in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and his 11th across NASCAR’s top two divisions. CW Sports celebrated the driver with the nickname The King of the Road after his dominant performance.

Reflecting on the win, van Gisbergen praised the team’s efforts:

“Yeah, good to finally execute. We had an awesome day. Thank you to Safety Culture, JR Motorsports. Pit crew was awesome. You know, the strategy worked out well and I wondered what was going to happen on that last restart and I kind of sucked the #41 [Sam Mayer] in and he took everyone out for me. So, that was cool.”

Van Gisbergen Eyes Record-Tying Streak at Upcoming Race

Following his success at COTA, Shane van Gisbergen is preparing for Sunday’s Duramax Texas Grand Prix, where he hopes to extend his streak of road course wins and challenge Jeff Gordon’s record for most consecutive victories on road courses. Van Gisbergen entered the current streak with five consecutive wins, beginning with the Mexico City race and ending with the Charlotte Roval.

Discussing his chances for continuing the streak, van Gisbergen acknowledged the difference in road racing opportunities between his era and that of Gordon. He commented,

“Good to finally win here and hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow. I did learn a bit. I tried some things. I wasn’t driving very good earlier today and we lacked in the car but also I can be better too. So, hopefully it’s worthwhile doing these races and yeah, hopefully it helps tomorrow.”

At last year’s COTA race, van Gisbergen finished sixth. This time, he qualified 13th, a position outside the top ten. Tyler Reddick secured pole position for the upcoming race and will aim for his third consecutive win, while Ross Chastain starts alongside him on the front row. Meanwhile, Connor Zilisch will line up in 25th place.

The significance of van Gisbergen’s ongoing performance is clear: he continues to prove himself as one of the premier road course drivers in NASCAR, capable of influencing championship outcomes and thrilling race fans with his skill and determination. His upcoming Cup Series bid at COTA will be closely watched, as his momentum could have a major impact on the season’s road course competitions.
